Now this is cool! Former NH House members who served in the late ’60s and ’70s came back to the chamber yesterday to talk about their time in office. They talked about how debate, voting, and the day-to-day work of lawmaking have changed over the decades. Back then, a single roll call in the smoke-filled chamber could take 45 minutes, and ashtrays sat where the seatback voting stations are now!

On this day in 1869, President Franklin Pierce passed away in Concord. He’s remembered as New Hampshire’s first and so far only U.S. President, but before the White House, he served right here in Representatives Hall being elected Speaker at just 26, the youngest in our history. His portrait has hung in Representatives Hall for more than a century.
