Today marks the 246th anniversary of one of the most important battles of the American Revolution, the Battle of Kings Mountain.

Often called the largest all‑American battle of the war, Kings Mountain took place as Loyalist militia forces in the Carolinas tried to reach General Cornwallis’s army for support. The Patriot militia was from South Carolina, North Carolina, Georgia, and Virginia. Known as the “Overmountain Men” from settlements in North Carolina and Virginia (present day Tennessee), they moved quickly to stop the Loyalists.

These Patriots were able to capture the Loyalist forces under Major Patrick Ferguson, before they could join up with Cornwallis. This forced Cornwallis to halt plans to advance into North Carolina, changing the campaign in the South.

The battle was brutal. Loyalist casualties were high, and many captured. Cornwallis was angered by this attack, and the Patriot forces had to withdraw before he arrived. The victory lifted Patriot morale in the South, which had been low at the start of 1780. The British had captured Charleston and won several harsh battles, often refusing to take prisoners. Because of this, many Patriots were unwilling to give quarter to Loyalist soldiers during and after the battle.

Future President Thomas Jefferson recognized the impact of the victory, calling it, "The turn of the tide of success."

The battle had a shattering effect on the Southern Campaign of the American Revolution. To learn more, Kings Mountain National Military Park, where a 1.6‑mile trail follows the same rough terrain the Overmountain Men crossed in 1780. More information is available at www.nps.gov/kimo.

The North Carolina Law Enforcement Women’s Association (NCLEWA) is a non-profit organization chartered in 1956, committed to enhancing the professionalism of women in law enforcement and promoting cooperation of training activities among law enforcement agencies in North Carolina. This week they finished a weeklong conference by remembering those who lost their lives during the 9-11 attacks. Moores Creek National Battlefield assisted in that remembrance by having Ranger Jason Howell play Amazing Grace to conclude the moment.

Moores Creek National Battlefield was honored to be part of the NCLEWA Conference and to help remember those who lost their lives during those tragic attacks 25 years ago today.

Across the National Park System, thousands of stories unfold every single year—stories of landscapes, people, history, and meaning. None of these stories could be shared without the dedication of our rangers and our incredible volunteers. Their tireless efforts and countless hours help visitors connect with the places that define our nation. As the Interpretation, Education & Volunteers directorate reminds us, parks become meaningful when people are welcomed, supported, and inspired to explore their significance.

Nearly 300,000 volunteers donate millions of hours annually, serving in almost every discipline of the NPS. Their service provides essential support that keeps our stories alive, accessible, and accurate.

Moores Creek National Battlefield would also like to personally thank our staff and volunteers for everything they do. Their professionalism, resilience, creativity, and dedication ensure that our visitors receive meaningful experiences every day. From preserving resources to sharing powerful stories, our team works together to keep this park thriving. We are deeply grateful for every staff member and every volunteer who helps care for this special place.

Park staff and volunteers are a true team—working side‑by‑side to share the most important stories of this country. Their partnership is not just helpful… it’s irreplaceable.
