A Justice of the Peace (JP) in Texas is an elected county official who presides over "people's court," handling minor civil disputes (up to $20,000.00), evictions, traffic tickets, and Class C misdemeanors. They also perform magistrate duties (issuing warrants, bail hearings), conduct inquests (coroner duties), and perform marriage ceremonies.
