Commercial Vehicle Fire | October 9, 2026

At 4:34 PM on October 9, 2026, Speake Fire & Rescue District was dispatched to the 5000 block of County Road 84 for a reported commercial vehicle fire.

Upon arrival, crews found the vehicle heavily involved in fire, with flames rapidly spreading to nearby vegetation. Speake Fire personnel quickly deployed a pre-connected hose line, bringing the fire under control and preventing further spread.

Thankfully, no injuries were reported.

We appreciate our firefighter’s quick response and the work they do to protect our community.

When Every Second Counts

On September 6, 2026, Speake Fire & Rescue crews were dispatched by Lawrence County 911 for an unresponsive patient. Upon arrival, crews found Mr. Phillips experiencing a serious cardiac emergency.

During their initial assessment, crews identified that Mr. Phillips was experiencing a life-threatening cardiac rhythm requiring immediate intervention. Utilizing our ALS-1 program, established through the Alabama Department of Public Health in 2024, our trained personnel were able to provide advanced life support and perform synchronized cardioversion, a life saving shock in the pre-hospital setting.

This intervention, along with the other care provided by responding crews, helped stabilize Mr. Phillips before he was quickly transported to the hospital for further medical care.

Mr. Phillip’s story is a powerful example of why investing in our community’s rural fire and rescue services matters more than ever. Having trained personnel, advanced equipment, and ALS capabilities available in our community can make a critical difference when seconds count.

We are grateful to Mr. Phillips for allowing us to share his story and thankful for the opportunity to serve our community.

We would also like to extend a special thank you to everyone who helps make our ALS program possible, as well as Greg's Ambulance Service, for the great teamwork and collaboration that helped make this a successful call.

A BIG ANNOUNCEMENT FOR THE SPEAKE COMMUNITY

On behalf of the Board of Directors of the Speake Volunteer Fire & Rescue District, we are extremely proud to share some important details regarding what we’ve been working on.

For years, the leadership of the Speake Volunteer Fire & Rescue Department have worked hard to provide the best fire and rescue protection possible with limited resources. Earlier this year, the board began working to find a sustainable solution to an annual financial shortfall of more than $20,000 per year. After months of planning and looking at different options, we have found what we believe is the best way to fund the community’s fire and rescue services.

Beginning January 1, 2027, Speake Volunteer Fire & Rescue will begin a partnership with Joe Wheeler EMC. Through this partnership, a $5-per-month fire compliance due will be collected on Speake Fire District residents electric bills. That’s $60 per year, or roughly 16 cents per day.

WE UNDERSTAND TIMES ARE TOUGH

We know that families are having to watch every dollar right now. We don’t take that lightly. That’s why we have worked hard to find a way to strengthen our department while asking as little as possible from the people we serve.

When someone calls 911, we must be ready to answer the call.

WHAT WILL THE $5 DO?

For many years, our department has operated with a recurring negative budget. Our organization has not seen an increase in funding since 1996! This funding will allow us to finally operate in the black, while giving us the ability to plan for the future instead of constantly trying to cover the next expense.

It will help us:
• Maintain and improve our ISO insurance rating
• Maintain and replace aging equipment
• Provide better training for our volunteers
• Improve our response capabilities
• Better protect our firefighters
• Keep up with increasing call volume and changing demands
• Build a responsible reserve for future needs

THIS IS ABOUT OUR COMMUNITY

Our volunteers aren’t responding to strangers. They’re responding to our neighbors, our friends, and our families. When the call comes in, we show up. This funding gives us an opportunity to make sure our volunteers have the equipment, training, and resources they need to continue doing that for years to come.

YOUR VOICE MATTERS

We are committed to being accountable and good stewards of every dollar our community provides.

November 5th at 6:00 PM, we will hold a community meeting open to everyone in our service area. You’ll have the opportunity to review our finances, meet the Board of Directors, ask questions, voice concerns, and learn exactly where these funds will go.

Letters will also be sent to residents with additional information about the changes taking effect January 1.

We want you to understand what we’re doing, why we’re doing it, and where your money is going. Thank you for trusting us. Thank you for supporting us. And thank you for allowing us to serve you.

đźš’ August was another busy month for the men and women of Speake Fire & Rescue with 42 calls for service.

Here’s a look at what our responders were up to throughout the month:

Medical Calls: 30
Lift Assists: 5
Motor Vehicle Accidents: 5
Structure Fires: 2

While structure fires are an important part of what we do, they make up only a small portion of the emergencies our volunteers respond to. Our members answer the call whenever and wherever they are needed.

We appreciate the dedicated group of volunteers for their continued efforts and sacrifices. We also want to thank our community for your continued support of Speake Fire & Rescue.

Thank you for allowing us to serve you! 🚒🇺🇸

Recently, we took delivery of 25 new sets of personal protective equipment (PPE) made possible through a $110,000 Assistance to Firefighters Grant (AFG).

Our previous turnout gear was purchased in 2013 and reached the end of its service life in 2023, leaving all of our volunteers responding to emergencies in outdated equipment. Today, that has changed.

This is a tremendous time for the members of Speake Volunteer Fire & Rescue District and the community we proudly serve. Our firefighters are now better equipped than ever before to respond safely and effectively when our neighbors need us most.

We are incredibly grateful to the Assistance to Firefighters Grant program, Representative Dale Strong for his support in helping make this investment in our department possible. This grant represents a significant commitment to the safety of our first responders and the citizens of our community.

VEIS & Window Bailout Training

Our firefighters also trained on VEIS (Vent, Enter, Isolate, Search) and emergency window bailout techniques. VEIS is a specialized rescue tactic used to quickly search targeted areas of a structure where victims are most likely to be found while limiting fire spread by isolating the room.

Members also practiced emergency window bailouts, a critical firefighter survival skill that prepares personnel to safely escape when conditions rapidly deteriorate and a normal exit is no longer available.

Training on advanced rescue and survival techniques helps ensure our firefighters are prepared to protect both the public and one another when lives are on the line.
