Just want to wish David Robitaille a smooth trip back to the Volusia County Branch Jail.

He's headed back here from Putnam County after VSO detectives identified him as the suspect who broke into a DeLand-area home and stole more than $27,000 in property, including 12 guns from a gun safe he pried open.

David had done landscaping work for the senior victims. When he learned they were going to be out of town for an extended period, he saw his chance.

Unfortunately for David, he was captured on video at the residence, and he left his GPS ankle monitor beeping in the garage.

A check of area pawn records revealed David and his girlfriend Jennifer pawned or sold several of the stolen tools, guns and am******on.

David has an extensive criminal history including 20 prior felony convictions. He is now charged with burglary while armed, 12 counts of grand theft of a fi***rm, possession of a fi***rm by a convicted felon, grand theft from a dwelling, 3 counts of dealing in stolen property, and 3 counts of violation of the pawn brokers act.

Jennifer was also arrested on several related charges.

VSO coordinated with the Putnam County Sheriff's Office Crime Suppression Team to locate both suspects and take them into custody without incident.

What a horrific nightmare in Bend, Oregon.

Three children, aged 5, 8 and 11, and one teacher were killed when a 16-year-old entered an elementary school with a long gun and started shooting.

A witness saw the teenager entering the school, followed him and engaged him in gunfire, killing him before more lives were lost.

The definition of an American hero. Even though police were reportedly there in 3 minutes, every second is life and death.

This is why having an armed individual (or multiple) stationed on all of our school campuses is so important. We cannot afford to deviate from the security measures we’ve taken, or take steps backwards in everything we’ve implemented to keep our Volusia County Schools safe.

I know all the information on this tragedy in Oregon is preliminary, developing and subject to change. But as it stands I just would like us all to pray for the families affected, salute the incredible American hero who saved innocent lives, and recommit to doing everything we can to protect our kids from violence.
