Update: State Road 25 is back open as of 3:15p
On October 13, 2026 at approximately 6:52am, Carroll County E911 dispatch center received calls regarding a serious motor vehicle crash near the intersection of State Road 218 and the Hoosier Heartland in Carroll County.
First responders arrived to the scene shortly after the dispatch went out for emergency response. Responding units located a van that had sustained heavy damage at the intersection with the driver still trapped inside. The other vehicle involved was a semi tractor-trailer hauling garbage that had overturned after the initial impact. The semi cab had caught fire and come to rest down a steep embankment off the east side of The Heartland.
It was determined there was only one occupant of the semi cab, the driver, who sustained serious injuries and was later flown out by medical helicopter for advanced care. The driver of the van was later extracted from the vehicle with minor injuries.
During the preliminary investigation, authorities determined the van was stopped on State Road 218 and attempted to cross the intersection with State Road 25 (Hoosier Heartland) going west. The driver of the van advised they did not see the northbound Semi tractor trailer before pulling out into the intersection.
Results from the crash include a massive effort to clean up the state highway of the material being transported and motor vehicle fluids and debris.
The crash remains under investigation by the Carroll County Sheriff’s Office.
