When you call 911, our dispatchers are the first link in getting you help. Every question has a purpose, and gathering information continues while help is being sent. Thank you to Carroll County EMS for highlighting that teamwork in this week’s “Behind the Call Mondays.” Stay on the line, answer as clearly as you can, and follow your dispatcher’s instructions.

🚑 BEHIND THE CALL MONDAYS

What happens when you call 911 for a medical emergency?

When you call 911 in Carroll County, dispatchers gather important information while sending help your way.

Your answers help responders understand the situation and determine whether additional resources are needed, such as fire, law enforcement, or even a medical helicopter.

As a rural county without a hospital, some emergencies require specialized care in larger cities like Indianapolis. Getting the right resources involved early can make a big difference.

Remember, every detail matters!

👋 Join us every Monday for Behind the Call Mondays to learn more about how Carroll County EMS serves our communities!

Happy National Farmers Day & Columbus Day!

Today, Carroll County 911 recognizes the farmers who work long hours to feed our communities and keep agriculture strong.

Our dispatchers know that harvest season brings additional traffic and large farm equipment onto our county roads.

We A few friendly reminders:

* Slow down when approaching farm equipment.
* Never pass unless it’s safe and legal.
* Allow extra room for tractors and combines.

📱🚨 911 KNOWS WHERE I AM… RIGHT?

Did you know that when you call 911 from your cell phone in Carroll County, your call might initially reach a 911 center in another county?

When you dial 911, the wireless network helps route your call based on cell tower coverage and available location information.

For example, you could be standing in Burlington, Indiana, in Carroll County, but your phone may be connected to a cell tower in Howard County. Depending on how the call is routed, your call could initially reach Howard County Dispatch instead of Carroll County Dispatch.

📍 BUT DOESN’T 911 KNOW MY LOCATION?

Next Generation 911 (NG911) has greatly improved location technology, but your location isn’t always immediately available or perfectly accurate.

Your initial location may only be approximate, with more accurate information becoming available as the call continues. Buildings, terrain, and wireless coverage can also affect accuracy.

❓ THAT’S WHY WE ASK: “WHERE IS YOUR EMERGENCY?”

Even when a location appears on our screens, Carroll County dispatchers will still ask you to confirm where your emergency is happening.

This helps us make sure we’re sending the correct police, fire, or EMS personnel to the right location.

🚨 WHEN CALLING 911, REMEMBER:

✅ Know your town, street address, nearest intersection, or nearby landmarks.

✅ Answer the dispatcher’s location questions, even if you think we already know where you are.

✅ If your call reaches another county’s 911 center, DO NOT HANG UP! Stay on the line and let the dispatcher help get your call to the correct agency.

✅ Remember, the cell tower your phone connects to doesn’t necessarily determine which 911 center receives your call.

💛 Technology helps, but your voice matters most.

When seconds count, knowing WHERE makes a difference.

Today I had the chance to recognize six members of our Carroll County Public Safety Communications team. These awards weren’t about simply doing the job. They recognized people who stepped up when things got difficult and continued to serve our responders and community.

Director’s Commendations were presented to Kaitee Wilson, Austin Townsend, and Britnee Richter.

Kaitee was recognized for her actions while working the console alone during the June 6 fatal structure fire. Austin and Britnee were recognized for their work on July 12, when they dealt with a major communications system failure while also handling several serious emergencies at the same time.

Certificates of Commendation were presented to Raylee Barnard, Alyssa Stevens, and Allissa Paxton.

Raylee was recognized for her professionalism and composure during and after a critical shooting incident. Alyssa was recognized for her continued growth, strong performance, and willingness to go above and beyond. Allissa was recognized for the support she provided during the September 6 fatal crash on Springboro Road.

And if you’re wondering why Allissa isn’t in the pictures, there is a very dispatcher-like reason — she had to get back to the console.

Most people never see what happens inside a 911 center. They don’t see the difficult calls, the decisions that have to be made quickly, or the work that goes into keeping responders informed and getting people the help they need.

I’m proud of these six, and I’m proud of the entire team they represent. They earned this recognition.

Congratulations Kaitee, Austin, Britnee, Raylee, Alyssa, and Allissa.
