Game, set, match! 🎾

Dorothy Martin Foster (daughter of Darwin and Isabelle Martin) and her husband, James Foster, enjoy a game of tennis at Graycliff, with the Martin family’s summer home in the background.

The tennis court was part of Frank Lloyd Wright’s original landscape plan, requested by the Martins. Its distinctive reddish concrete was pigmented to evoke the look of a clay court while complementing the autumnal colors of the buildings.

Today, the historic tennis court has been restored, bringing this original feature of Wright’s landscape design back to life.

Next time you visit Graycliff, take a stroll past the restored tennis court and imagine an afternoon on the grounds nearly 100 years ago!

Protecting our feathered neighbors at Graycliff!

Our team recently installed Acopian BirdSavers, a simple but effective way to help prevent bird collisions! These hanging cords break up reflections in the glass, helping birds recognize windows as obstacles and avoid flying into them.

Located along the Lake Erie shoreline, Graycliff sits within a major North American bird migration corridor, making it especially important to protect both our resident and migratory birds.

As stewards of Graycliff's historic architecture and natural landscape, we're proud to take small but meaningful steps toward a more bird-friendly environment, and follow the core practice shared by the Cornell Lab of Ornithology: "Treat glass by day, dim lights at night."

Next time you visit, take a closer look at our BirdSavers! Have you spotted them yet?

When Frank Lloyd Wright designed Graycliff, Isabelle R. Martin had a very specific request: she wanted the house flooded with natural light.

Isabelle experienced impaired vision from an early age, and her desire for abundant light influenced the design of her summer home — including spaces used by the Martin family's staff.

While the Martin House in Buffalo was designed decades earlier as the family’s primary residence, Graycliff was created as a very different kind of home: a light-filled summer retreat shaped around Isabelle’s wishes.

On your next visit, see how many ways you can spot Isabelle’s love of light reflected throughout Graycliff!

The orchard is growing again at Graycliff! 🍎 🍐

When Graycliff’s gardens were completed in 1931, the estate extended beyond the formal Home Grounds into fields used for a more hands-on connection with the land. Those fields included a vegetable garden, wildflower meadow, pine grove, and an orchard of about 30 fruit trees.

This month, Head Gardener Emma Hahn took an exciting step toward bringing that orchard back to life, planting 15 new heirloom fruit trees - 12 apples and 3 pears.

The collection includes historic varieties such as Northern Spy, Baldwin, Golden Russet, Grimes Golden, Esopus Spitzenburg, Chenango Strawberry, Beurre Bosc, Anjou, and Seckel.

These young trees were planted bare-root, meaning they’ll need a few seasons to grow into the orchard we envision. And if you notice a few looking a little crooked at first, don’t worry! Young trees are planted with their trunks straight at the base, while their flexible upper growth naturally responds to sunlight as they mature.

The orchard is still in its early stages, but we’re excited to watch it grow and help reconnect Graycliff’s landscape with its history as a country retreat.
