At approximately 5:11 this evening the Derby Fire Department was dispatched to 272 Derby Ave for the possible structure fire with multiple 911 calls.
First arriving unit confirmed there was a working fire with fire in the rear and one side of the building. This was a challenging fire because the house is one story on the street side and three stories down in the rear. Initial reports were possible people trapped in the building. Due to intense heat and smoke members were unable to make entry into the front door. Porches on the rear had collapsed. We decided to flow the ladder pipe to try and put out as much fire as possible before sending members into the building. Members were finally able to get into the building and extinguish all visible fire. All of this was while members were attacking the fire from the rear down over thirty feet from the front door. Extensive overhaul was required within the building. Excellent job by all departments involved.

Today, members of the Derby Fire Department participated in Roof Rope Rescue training led by Josh Miller and his team at Signal 73 Fire Training.

The training focused on our department’s newly acquired Roof Rope Rescue Bags, an important addition to our rescue equipment. Roof Rope Rescue is a specialized technique used to rescue individuals trapped on upper floors or rooftops when traditional methods, such as ladders or interior stairways, are not accessible. Using specialized rope equipment, firefighters can safely reach and lower individuals to safety.

As the City of Derby continues to grow and our firefighters encounter a wide variety of building types and layouts, having the proper equipment and training is more important than ever. This training helps ensure our members are prepared to handle challenging rescue situations safely and effectively when every second counts.

We would like to extend a special thank you to Josh Miller and the Signal 73 Fire Training team for sharing their knowledge and expertise. Thank you as well to the members of Companies 2 and 4 who participated in today's training and continue to dedicate their time to improving our department’s capabilities and protecting our community.

At 4:40 this morning the Derby Fire Department was dispatched to the area of Derby Ave and Main st for the reported Motor vehicle accident involving a tractor trailer truck with the operator reported trapped.

First arriving units found a Trailer truck into the wall in front of St Michael’s church with heavy damage and the driver heavily trapped in the cab.

Shelton squad 1 and Ansonia engine 6 re requested to assist with the extended extrication along with Tracy’s Garage.

Members made contact with the operator and began stabilization and extrication from the cab. Struts and one of Tracy’s garages tow trucks were used to lift the trailer off the cab to gain better access to the driver. The driver was removed after 45 minutes of work to free him from the vehicle.

Great team work was displayed between the Derby Fire Department, Storm Engine Co./Ambulance Corps Co. 2, Ansonia Fire Department, Echo Hose Hook & Ladder Co. 1, Derby Police Department, Ansonia Rescue and Medical Services and Valley Emergency Medical Services and Tracy's Garage Inc..
