The Hotel Halbrook, the home of the Clement Railroad Hotel Museum, was constructed in 1913 and is one of the few remaining examples of a railroad hotel in a small Tennessee town. It functioned as a hotel until 1954. On June 9, 2009, it opened to the public once again and became officially known as the Clement Railroad Hotel Museum, under the Tennessee Historical Commission. The Museum explores the history and heritage of Dickson County, the Western Highland Rim, and the State of Tennessee through exhibits and collections relating to the railroad, iron ore industry, commerce, the Civil War, settlement, and the accomplishments of Tennessee Governor Frank G. Clement. The Museum is fortunate to have many artifacts and items that once belonged to Governor Clement and his family. Museum visitors can see the rooms where the Clements' lived while managing the Hotel Halbrook as well as exhibits featuring Governor Clement's early years, campaigns, and accomplishments. Here at the Clement Railroad Hotel Museum, we educate and provide events for the community, give tours throughout the museum, provide membership to visitors, offer venue rental and are a visitor center right at the heart of Dickson. This project is funded under an agreement with the Tennessee Department of Environment and Conservation, Tennessee Historical Commission.

Today marks the 57th anniversary of the tragic death of Tennessee’s 41st Governor, Frank G. Clement.

On November 4, 1969, Clement was killed in an automobile accident along Franklin Pike in Davidson County. He was just 49 years old. Having left office in 1967, he l returned to practicing law and was rumored to be preparing for another gubernatorial campaign. His sudden death ended one of Tennessee’s most remarkable political stories.

First elected in 1952 at just 32 years old, Clement became Tennessee’s second-youngest governor. Serving 10 years across three historic terms, he remains the state’s second-longest-serving governor.

His many accomplishments included:

• Providing free textbooks to public school students in grades 1–12.
• Establishing the Tennessee Department of Mental Health.
• Modernizing Tennessee’s highways and transportation infrastructure.
• Expanding vocational education and community colleges.
• Becoming the first Southern governor to veto a segregation bill.
• Helping transform Tennessee into a modern industrial state.

Born in a railroad hotel in Dickson, Clement rose to the governor’s office and the national political stage, even delivering the keynote address at the 1956 Democratic National Convention at just 36 years old.

Today, the Clement Railroad Hotel Museum - Hotel Halbrook State Historic Site preserves his story in the very building where he was born.

57 years later, we remember his extraordinary life, his public service, and his enduring legacy in Tennessee history.

🇺🇸 Happy Election Day from the Clement Museum! 🇺🇸

Today, November 3, Tennesseans will elect our state’s 51st governor!

74 years ago (well, technically 73 years and 364 days ago), on November 4, 1952, Dickson County native, Frank G. Clement was elected Tennessee’s 41st governor!

But did you know that Clement made history in more ways than one?

When Clement was elected in 1952, Tennessee governors only served two-year terms. A 1953 state constitutional convention changed those terms to four years beginning with the 1954 election. After winning reelection, Clement became the last Tennessee governor to serve a two-year term and the first to serve a four-year term!

There was just one catch! The new constitution prohibited consecutive four-year terms, although there was no lifetime term limit.

Unable to run again in 1958, Clement was succeeded by his Commissioner of Agriculture, Buford Ellington, who became Tennessee’s 42nd governor. Clement returned to office in 1962, followed by Ellington again in 1966!

This period of TN history became known as the “Leapfrog Era,” when Tennessee had just TWO governors over 18 years (1953–1971).

The prohibition on consecutive terms remained until constitutional changes in the 1970s established today’s system, allowing governors to serve two consecutive four-year terms.

As you head to the polls today, remember that today’s elections become tomorrow’s history!

🇺🇸 Happy Election Day! Get out and VOTE! 🇺🇸
