A Douglas Fir in downtown Durango nominated for the inaugural La Plata County Tree of the Year Contest will NOT be removed to make way for a police parking lot. Signs posted near the former Big Picture High School building at 215 E. 12th St. referenced that the tree would be “demolished and replaced by a parking lot.” A QR code that referenced an online voting site was on the sign, but the voting ended Oct. 25 and the site is no longer active. The tree was never scheduled for removal. For more information please visit https://www.durangoco.gov/m/newsflash/home/detail/4933

The Animas River has reopened to recreational users between Oxbow Park and Dallabetta Park following the recent flooding. The decision was made after the river flow was consistently below 5000 cfs. Enjoy, but please be careful.

Fort Lewis College honored eight alumni, including Assistant City Manager Erin Hyder, on Saturday, Oct. 24 during the Alumni Summit Awards. The awards celebrate alumni whose leadership, mentorship, philanthropy, and service are creating opportunities for students and communities. Hyder, (Acccounting, ’03) held human resources leadership positions in the ski industry before joining the City of Durango in 2020. She became an assistant city manager in 2022. She has also served on the board of La Plata Youth Services and mentored students, young professionals, and fellow FLC alumni.
