It's School Bus Safety Week!

School bus safety starts with all of us. This School Bus Safety Week, the California Highway Patrol reminds drivers to slow down, stay alert, and watch for children getting on and off the bus.

Always remember these important safety tips:
✔️ Stop when a school bus activates its flashing red lights and extends its stop sign.
✔️ Never pass a stopped school bus when its red lights are flashing.
✔️ Watch for children near bus stops, in school zones, and crossing the street.
✔️ Always follow posted speed limits and stay focused behind the wheel.

Every child deserves a safe ride to and from school. Let's do our part to protect our youngest passengers and keep our roads safe.

NATIONAL MOVE OVER DAY 🇺🇸🚨

Every day, law enforcement officers, firefighters, emergency medical personnel, tow truck operators, and roadside workers put their safety at risk while assisting others on our highways.

On October 13, two CHP officers were injured when a vehicle entered a closed section of I-80 in Solano County and struck their patrol vehicle. (See our previous post for details.)

Moving over and slowing down isn't just a courtesy, it's the law.

⚖️ MOVE OVER LAW:
Under California Vehicle Code Section 21809, drivers approaching stationary emergency vehicles, tow trucks, highway maintenance vehicles, or other vehicles displaying qualifying warning lights or devices must:

đźš” MOVE OVER: Safely change lanes to provide space when approaching and passing in an adjacent lane, when safe and practicable.

⚠️ SLOW DOWN: If changing lanes is unsafe or impracticable, reduce your speed to a reasonable and safe level.

Behind every flashing light is someone who deserves to make it home. So please remember to stay alert and remain attentive to changing traffic conditions.

A commercial vehicle was placed Out-Of-Service after an inspection revealed a ruptured air brake hose.

Air brake systems are critical to the safe operation of commercial vehicles. A damaged or ruptured air hose can result in a loss of air pressure, reduced braking capability, and potentially catastrophic consequences.

Safety starts with proper maintenance. Don't compromise when it comes to your brakes.

A cracked composite spring on a commercial vehicle is a serious safety concern that can compromise suspension integrity, vehicle stability, and safe operation.

A commercial vehicle can be placed Out-Of-Service for a cracked composite spring if it has:

1) An intersecting crack of any length.

2) A crack that extends beyond 75% of the length of the spring.

Suspension components should be routinely inspected for damage and signs of wear. Identifying defects early can help prevent equipment failures and keep our roadways safe.

A seatbelt is designed to protect you when it matters most, but only if it is properly maintained and in good working order.

California Vehicle Code §27315(f) requires the owner of a motor vehicle operated on a highway to maintain the vehicle’s required safety belts in good working order for the protection of its occupants.

The seatbelts shown in these photos have torn and frayed webbing. Damage like this compromises the integrity of the restraint system and prevent the belt from performing as designed during a crash.

Take a few seconds to inspect your seatbelts:
• Look for cuts, tears, fraying and stretched webbing
• Check to ensure the buckle and latch plate function properly
• Make sure the belt retracts normally
• Never modify, repair, or improvise a damaged seatbelt system
• Replace damaged restraint components with appropriate replacement equipment

Seatbelts are life-saving equipment. Buckle up to protect yourself and your passengers.

The California Highway Patrol continues to make progress in the fight against organized retail crime.

From August 1st–9th, CHP’s Organized Retail Crime Task Force joined more than 100 law enforcement agencies nationwide for the National Organized Retail Crime Blitz, conducting coordinated enforcement operations at businesses, shopping centers, and retail stores across California.

The results:
• 97 suspects arrested, including 8 on felony charges
• More than 8,500 stolen items recovered
• Approximately $1.05 million in stolen merchandise recovered

These efforts build on last year’s success and reflect CHP’s continued commitment to holding organized retail theft suspects accountable and protecting California businesses and communities.

During a recent inspection, an inspector identified bulging air lines on the brake system of a commercial motor vehicle when air pressure was applied. Bulging air lines are an indication that the hose integrity has been compromised and may result in a sudden air system failure. Fortunately, this violation was located before the vehicle continued down the highway. Replacing damaged air lines is essential to maintaining a safe and reliable air brake system.
