🌿 Hermit Hut Update 🌿

As our contractors prepare to relocate the historic Henry Stuart House, also known as the Hermit Hut, Flying Creek Nature Preserve will be closed to the public on the day of the move.

This temporary closure will give our contractors the space they need to safely complete the relocation and help protect this unique piece of Fairhope’s history. We will announce the exact date and time of the move at a later date.

Thank you for your patience and understanding as we continue improving Flying Creek Nature Preserve while honoring the history that makes our community unique. 🌳

🐾 Meet the newest four-legged helper working to protect our local waterways!

The Mobile Bay National Estuary Program is taking an innovative approach to identifying sewage contamination by training a dog to sniff out potential problems in our waterways.

Protecting our local waters is an important part of preserving the natural beauty and health of the places we love, including Flying Creek Nature Preserve!

Check out this story from WKRG to learn more!

A dog’s nose can detect things humans can’t. Now, researchers are putting that ability to work to protect our waterways.

🐦 Wildlife Wednesday: Take Flight into Bird Watching! 🦉

Birds play an important role in keeping our ecosystems healthy! From spreading seeds and pollinating plants to controlling insect populations, birds help maintain the balance of the natural world. They also serve as important indicators of ecosystem health, reminding us of the value of protecting the habitats they depend on.

🌿 Looking for a way to connect with our local wildlife? Visit the Bird Blind at Flying Creek Nature Preserve! It’s a great place to slow down, observe the birds around you, and appreciate the wildlife that calls our preserve home. Bring your binoculars, keep an eye out for movement in the trees, and see which feathered visitors you can spot!

Every visit is an opportunity to discover something new about the nature right here in our own backyard.

🌱 Hands-on learning at Flying Creek! 🦋

This week, we had the pleasure of welcoming volunteers from the Southeast Stormwater Association (SESWA) conference out to Flying Creek Nature Preserve!

While visiting the preserve, volunteers learned about some of our native plant species and the invasive plants that threaten them. They got their hands dirty helping us remove invasive Camphor and Coral Ardisia, while also learning about our native milkweeds and their importance to local pollinators.

The group also helped us prepare our butterfly garden for upcoming plantings, getting the area ready to provide even more habitat for butterflies and other pollinators. 🦋🌿

We’re always excited to have visitors not only explore Flying Creek, but also get involved and learn more about the plants, wildlife, and ecosystems that make our preserve special.

A special thanks to Carmen AU Aces and Baldwin County - Alabama Extension for their help in our Butterfly Garden. Also thank you to everyone who came out and helped us care for Flying Creek! 🌱

🐾 Wildlife Wednesday: Follow the Tracks! 🐾

Have you ever noticed footprints along the trails at Flying Creek Nature Preserve? Those tracks can tell us a lot about the wildlife that calls the preserve home!

From raccoons and deer to opossums, squirrels, and even our smaller woodland visitors, animals leave behind clues as they move through the park. Look closely after a rainy day or along muddy areas near Fly Creek—you may be surprised by what you find! 👀

Next time you’re exploring the preserve, keep an eye on the ground. You might not see the animal itself, but its tracks can give you a little glimpse into who passed through before you. 🌿🐾
