This November, Helen Helen is proudly representing the Flushing YMCA in the 2026 TCS New York City Marathon with Team Y Champions—and for Helen, this is about so much more than crossing the finish line.

With over 50 marathons under her belt, Helen has always found purpose in running, honoring loved ones and turning personal challenges into strength. Now, she’s taking that passion even further by running to make a difference in the lives of others.

As a school nurse, Helen knows firsthand how important it is to invest in our youth. Every mile she runs will support the Y’s mission of empowering young people, strengthening families, and building healthier communities.

Helen is ready to take on the 26.2 miles—now, she needs our community behind her! 🙌

Our 3K and 4K Curriculum Night was filled with learning, laughter, and meaningful connections! 🧩✨

We loved welcoming our families as parents engaged with our amazing teachers through hands-on activities that gave them a glimpse into what their little learners experience in the classroom each day.

From exploring fun learning activities to discovering how we support our students’ growth and development, our families got to learn, play, and have fun right alongside our educators! 🖍️👐

Today, we celebrated the groundbreaking of the new B**g and May Yu Family YMCA at Flushing Commons—an exciting milestone as the Flushing Y celebrates 100 years of serving Queens and begins building toward its next century of impact.

The new 63,000-square-foot, state-of-the-art YMCA will create even more opportunities for our community to connect, grow, and thrive, with an eight-lane swimming pool—the largest of any YMCA branch in NYC—a regulation-size gymnasium, exercise studios, multipurpose rooms, and dedicated spaces for youth programs and our New Americans Initiative.

Zainab didn’t think studying computer information systems was in her future until she found her potential at the Y. Now she’s headed to Mercy University and hopes to inspire other young Black women to pursue STEM.

Ready to level up your incline dumbbell press technique? Staten Island Broadway YMCA fitness instructor Daniele is here to show you how to safely lift the weight and incorporate four-second negatives. The “negative” is the lowering phase of an exercise. When doing an incline dumbbell press, it’s when the dumbbells move from the top of the press back down toward your chest. This part of the lift is as important as the press itself—it’s one of the best ways to build strength, muscle, and control 💪

What does it mean to stand up for your community?

For Layla, a participant in our Teens Take the City (TTC) Youth Leadership Program, it starts with using your voice.

As Layla shares, if you care about your community, don’t be afraid to speak up about issues that matter. Civic engagement isn’t reserved for elected officials or community leaders. It starts with neighbors, young people, families, and everyday residents who care enough to get involved and advocate for the people around them.

At the YMCA of Greater New York, we believe strong communities are built from the ground up. Through programs like Teens Take the City, young people develop the confidence, knowledge, and leadership skills to become active participants in shaping their neighborhoods and creating positive change.

When we empower young people to raise their voices today, we’re helping build stronger, healthier communities for tomorrow.
