Early Detection Saves Lives:
October Is Breast Cancer Awareness Month
Representatives of St. Mary's Healthcare's Cancer Services Program joined Montgomery County officials on Sept. 22 as the county formally proclaimed October 2026 as Breast Cancer Awareness Month.
The recognition highlights the importance of breast cancer education, prevention and early detection, while also acknowledging the efforts of organizations that help connect community members with lifesaving screening services.
Breast cancer remains one of the most commonly diagnosed cancers, and regular mammograms continue to play a critical role in detecting the disease early when treatment is often most effective.
The county's proclamation also recognizes the work of the Cancer Services Program serving Fulton, Montgomery and Schenectady counties by helping eligible residents access breast, cervical and colorectal cancer screenings.
While breast cancer primarily affects women, men can develop breast cancer as well. Breast Cancer Awareness Month is an opportunity for everyone to learn the signs and symptoms of the disease, understand personal risk factors and prioritize preventive health care.
Breast Cancer Awareness Month serves as an important reminder to prioritize preventive care.
Early detection often leads to more treatment options and better outcomes, making regular screening one of the most effective tools in the fight against breast cancer.
