But why didn’t they just leave?

We hear this all the time. Domestic Abuse is layered, complex and not as simple as packing a bag and leaving.

Roughly 1 in 4 women and 1 in 7 men over the age of 18 in the U.S. have experienced severe intimate partner physical violence and over 10 million Americans experience domestic abuse each year, which spans physical violence, emotional control, and financial coercion.

Domestic abuse victims often cannot leave because of severe barriers related to essentials, money, and survival resources. Because of this, we turn to agencies like Crisis Intervention Service to help provide the items survivors need immediately. It’s why donations are imperative for the transition period into a new beginning.

A huge thank you to House of Him for this massive donation of cleaning supplies, hygiene, essentials, and baby products.

Our supply drive has two weeks left! Please reach out if you have any questions about donating. 💜

You may notice that the courtyard at the Winnebago County Courthouse is looking a little different. 💜

When you’re taking your daily walk, driving on your morning commute or heading to take your kiddos to their next activity, take a moment to stop and read these honest and raw facts about domestic violence. Often we hear, “why didn’t they just leave?” and the answer is complex, heart wrenching and a reality that many survivors face. It isn’t as easy as packing a bag and walking out the door. It’s layered in fear and safety concerns, emotional and psychological factors, financial binds, social and cultural pressures, systemic and institutional barriers and yes, love.

Please take a moment out of your day to visit our courtyard. Feel free to snap a picture and share this post with friends and family.

Also, a reminder of our supply drive—all donations are greatly appreciated.

We ask that you help bring attention to the month of October while we recognize Domestic Abuse Awareness Month.

This month serves multiple purposes: it empowers survivors to access help, educates communities to recognize signs of abuse, encourages systemic change in policies and services, and mobilizes the public to take a stand against domestic abuse.
The Winnebago County Attorney's Office stands with survivors of domestic violence. Safety, support and solidarity is the key to seeing violence minimized in our communities.

Part of our mission this month is to help families get a fresh start when they need it the most. Please help fill our supply drive buckets throughout the courthouse. All items collected throughout the month of October will be donated to Crisis Intervention Services.

Please share our mission with your friends and family. Together as a community, allow us to help you understand the stigmas surrounding domestic abuse and uplift those who need it the most.
