Microplastics are tiny particles intentionally manufactured for commercial use. Examples include microbeads in face scrubs or toothpaste, glitter, and raw plastic pellets (called nurdles). It also include microfibers shed from synthetic clothes like polyester or nylon when washed.
It also includes fragments created when larger plastic items—such as water bottles, plastic bags, or car tires—break down over time. Sunlight (UV radiation) and ocean waves speed up this physical breakdown. They find their way into our food supply. The best prevention is to become an educated buyer and stay away from products that contain microbeads and limit use of plastic. The unfortunate thing is plastic NEVER go away, they simply change the form that they're in. Watch 'A Plastic Ocean'. It's a 2016 feature-length adventure documentary directed by Craig Leeson about global plastic pollution. A real eye-opener!
