Dear “I’ll Be Damned If…”,

There is something about bringing a script to life. From the first reading to opening night. But this was different. A piece of history, our history was re-presented to us in a way that is relatable, inspirational, and life giving.

To the actors: While others are working hard to erase our history, you all have worked 10 times harder to keep it alive. You were more than characters and roles. You are keepers of this craft — sent to preserve, protect, and pass down who we as a people are.

To the production team: We have transcended because of you. You have placed us in various points of history and time and that is no easy feat. Thank you all for your intentionality and putting your artistic abilities on display.

To the playwright, Cherie Williams: Two years of writing, gathering, planning, and executing. You have done what seems impossible, and you have done it with grace and care. Thank you for allowing Jubilee to put this work on display.

To the director, Calvin J. Walker: You’ve done it again! You are a gem to Jubilee. Thank you for ALL that you do and for who you are. You have given yourself time and time again, and we pray that you see the fruits of your labor consistently.

To our multi-hyphenated queen, Carlean Gill: There is nothing like giving flowers to people while they are still here and we pray we have been able to do that for you, Ms. Carlean. What a force you are! You have inspired MANY to use our gifts and cry out our ‘I’ll be damned if’!

Thank you so much to every patron, donor, sponsor, and friend and family member of Carlean Gill. We are nothing without you. ❤️

To THE D. Wambui Richardson,

You are so much more than Jubilee’s Executive Artistic Director. You are a father, friend, and confidant. None of us would be where we are without your care, correction, guidance, love, meals (you just have to be there), and creativity. We appreciate you for who you are, NOT just what you do.

Thank you to Maroon 9 Community Enrichment Organization for honoring Wambui with this special award. The best is truly yet to come for D. Wambui Richardson! We love you Wambui! ❤️
