MONTHLY SUBMISSION

Greetings from RSU #24,

It is hard to believe that the end of October is within striking distance. The colors have been beautiful and the temperatures just right, crisp and cool! We are about 8 weeks into school and things seem to be running smoothly.

Believe it or not, we have already started the budget conversation for the 2027-2028 school year. We've had a couple of Finance and Budget Committee Meetings and discussed dates of upcoming meetings. The RSU Board of Directors recognizes that times are tough and, as a result, the conversations have also included how best to plan for the long-term fiscal sustainability of the district. This has not been and won't be an easy conversation. I am hopeful that we will be able to figure out how best to meet the needs of our students while balancing our communities ability to support those needs. The date, time, and location of our meetings can be found on our website (www.rsu24.org). The actual FY'28 Budget Workshops will take place on January 26, February 4, February 9, February 23, and March 4 and all meetings will take place at the District Services Facility unless otherwise noted on our website.

From the Sumner Athletic Boosters:

Get ready to light up the field, Tiger fans! Sumner Athletic Boosters invites the community to join our middle and high school soccer teams for a fun-
filled Glow-in-the-Dark Soccer Night this November! The exact date will be announced once the high school playoffs have concluded.

The evening will kick off at 4:00 p.m. with a middle school soccer game, followed by a high school game at 5:00 p.m. Teams will feature a mix of
boys and girls, making this a fun opportunity for our athletes to come together and celebrate the end of another soccer season.
This special event will also serve as the official kickoff for the Light Up the Field Project, an initiative to raise funds for a lighting system for the
Sumner soccer field. The field is used by all of our teams, and adding lights would provide more opportunities for our student-athletes to practice
and play. Donations will be collected throughout the evening to help make this important community project a reality. There is no admission charge,
so everyone is welcome to come out and enjoy the fun!
We encourage community members to bring a crockpot of their favorite tailgate food or another dish to share. Whether it's mac and cheese, baked
beans, chili, or something sweet, let's make this a true Tiger community gathering! Sumner Athletic Boosters will provide hot chocolate and coffee to
help keep everyone warm.
Bring your family, invite your friends, wear your Sumner blue, and come cheer on our student-athletes as they take the field for their final soccer
games of the season. It's a great chance to celebrate our teams, support our athletes, and help get the Light Up the Field Project shining bright!
Be sure to follow Sumner Athletic Boosters on Facebook for the official date, event updates, photos, and more information about the project.
Let's fill the field with Tiger pride and make this a night to remember!
Go Tigers!

For those interested, there is no school on November 11th (Veterans Day), November 25-27, and December 24th to January 3rd.

Thank you for your continued support of the school district. If you ever have any questions regarding the district, please don't hesitate to reach out to me at [email protected].

Sincerely,

Good morning,

I hope that this email finds you well. The RSU #24 Budget and Finance Committee will be meeting on Tuesday, October 13th at 6:30 p.m. The meeting will take place in the Sumner Auditorium and will feature a guest speaker from the Maine Department of Education. Paula Gravelle, Director of Public School Finance, will be joining the meeting remotely and will be discussing the state school funding formula. As we begin to gear up for our next budget season, we are working to make sure that we are supporting our communities to hopefully better understand the school budget and budgeting process. Please let me know if you have any questions. I hope that you are able to make the meeting.

Sincerely,

Special Town Meeting - October 12, directly after the Selectboard Meeting at 6:00 pm.

On September 28th, the Select Board approved a Special Town Meeting for October 12th. Then the Budget Committee gave its recommendation.

The Special Town Meeting Warrant will have two (2) articles. One article is to revamp the General Zoning Ordinance for Mobile Home Parks - requiring a greater foot print per lot.

The second article will move the date to start accruing interest on unpaid taxes from October 31st to December 31st, extending the grace period.

We still are unsure of when the tax bills will be out, soon we hope. The last revaluation in 2009, the tax bills did not go out until October 3rd.

We anticipate the property taxes will not go down from last year, as the RSU #24 School Budget was increased from last year.

You still may pay on your taxes. Once the taxes are committed, if you over paid, it will go towards next year. If you under paid, just pay the balance.

From the Sumner Athletic Boosters: A New School Year, A New Season!

Welcome to a new school year and another exciting year of athletics at Sumner! The Sumner Athletic Boosters are looking forward
to another season of supporting our student-athletes and the many activities that make our school community special.

We would like to extend a huge
thank you to everyone who contributed to the Walter Crabtree Memorial Tournament this summer.
Thanks to the incredible support of our community, we raised
more than $3,000 through concessions!
Of that amount, $1,000 has been earmarked for a scholarship in Walter’s name. We

are proud to honor Walter’s memory in this way and look forward to supporting the tournament again next summer.

Light Up the Field!

Our big project this year is the
Light Up the Field! Project,
an effort to bring lights to the Sumner soccer field.

With two varsity soccer teams and a large middle school team all sharing one field for practices and games, having lights will
make a tremendous difference. It will give our athletes more flexibility with practice and game schedules and allow us to make better use of our community soccer field.

We know that lighting an athletic field is a major undertaking—and a very expensive one—so we have divided the project into three
phases.

Phase 1:
We are currently working with
Spike Power,
owned by Dakota “Spike” Hellum, to provide and install the four poles needed for the project. Spike has been incredibly generous with his pricing, and we are excited to get this phase underway once the soccer season is complete.

Phase 2:
The next step will be getting power to the poles, including the installation of underground conduit.
If you are a contractor or have experience in this area and would like to help our Sumner athletes, we
would love to hear from you!

Phase 3:
Finally, we will work with a lighting company to install the actual field lights and connect the entire system.

This is a
huge community project,
but we believe it is one that will have a lasting impact on Sumner athletics for years to come. With the support of our community, we know we can create the
Sumner Community Soccer Field that our athletes deserve.

Want to Get Involved?

There are many ways to support the Sumner Athletic Boosters—from joining the organization and volunteering in the concession stand
to cooking, helping with fundraising, providing sponsorships, or lending your skills to projects like Light Up the Field!

If you would like to get involved or learn more about how you can help, please contact
Ginny Dennison
[email protected].

Thank you for supporting Sumner athletics and, most importantly, our student-athletes!

For those (parents) planning ahead, we do not have school on October 9th as it is a professional development day for our staff and October 12th as it is a holiday. For those looking into November, we do not have school on Wednesday the 11th in honor of Veterans Day.

The RSU Board of Directors typically meets on the first Tuesday of the month and the subcommittees on the other Tuesdays during the month. The website will have the most up-to-date schedule of meetings and just prior to the meetings, we post the agendas for the respective upcoming meeting(s). If you ever have any questions about the meetings or agendas, please don't hesitate to reach out to the District Services Facility at (207)422-2017. Also, our RSU Board meetings are recorded and shared via YouTube. The link can be found on our website by clicking on the Board/Agendas and Minutes/Minutes tabs.

Kristen McFarland,
our After School Program Coordinator, was recognized by the Maine After School Network at their recent conference with the Outstanding Professional Award.
This award is presented to an individual who serves as a model to other afterschool professionals around the state, exhibiting career proficiency
and personal excellence. The individual receiving this award should not only be seen as a leader in their programming, but also in making positive contributions to the field of afterschool in Maine. Congratulations, Kristen!

Thank you for your continued support of the school district. If you have any questions, concerns, or comments that you would like to pass along, please send them to me at [email protected].
