Why do our volunteers work so tirelessly and put their heart and soul into saving the LK House. Here's you answer: if we don't, who will? The Kirby mansion in Houston, the last grand mansion left of the hundreds of grand homes that used to be in the downtown area, is no more. Surrounded by freeways and development, the property stood for years as a symbol of the Houston that once was. When I was in 7th grade, our Girl Scout troop sang Christmas carols on grand staircase to the Red Cross staff who were headquartered here. Even at that age, I was mesmerized by getting to go inside such a grand, old home. Maybe that's where my love of old homes came from; I don't know. What I do know is that once these homes are gone, they are lost forever. The relentless trend of demolition in nearby River Oaks continues and soon Houston will have no vestige of the past.
The vast number of Victorian homes in Galveston is a treasure that hundreds of homeowners struggle to preserve every day. Thank you to all of you who put your time and money into keeping Galveston's past alive. You are all heroes and we will continue to do our part to preserve Galveston's rich architectural history.
