Congratulations to all the students who participated in this year’s “Beyond Gilroy: Nature, Exploration, and Empowerment” program. Through a state-funded grant, the City provided nearly two dozen middle school students with hands-on learning experiences focused on environmental conservation in the Monterey Bay region.

Participants took part in four field trips and six classroom sessions led by Save Our Shores (SOS), a Santa Cruz–based environmental education organization. These experiences helped students explore local ecosystems, develop stewardship skills, and deepen their understanding of our regional environment.

To celebrate the end of the program, students and their families were invited to a recognition ceremony honoring their accomplishments.

The City of Gilroy Recreation Division and Save Our Shores look forward to offering the program again next school year, and we are excited to welcome even more students to join us on this journey of learning and discovery.

Attention Gilroy Residents!

A water main break was reported at Las Animas Park, resulting in the temporary closure of the park bathrooms and playground. Portable restrooms will be available on site for any planned weekend activities.

Staff and contractors are actively working to complete the necessary repairs and restore water service as quickly as possible. While we are hopeful that water service will be restored prior to the weekend, repair timelines remain dependent on field conditions and successful system testing.

The playground area will likely remain closed through the weekend to allow for completion of repairs, site restoration, and to ensure the area is safe for public use.

We appreciate the community's patience and understanding as this work is completed.

The park remains open, but for your safety, please stay away from all taped-off areas.

If you have any questions, you may contact the Public Works Operations team at 408-846-0424.

Thank you to everyone who rolled through our annual Bike to Wherever Days Energizer Station!

Each year, the Gilroy Parks and Recreation Commission sets up an energizer station by the Christmas Hill Park levee to cheer on cyclists as they ride by. Riders stopped by for swag, morning snacks, and conversation, adding great energy to the day.

Bike to Wherever Days is a wonderful reminder of how biking brings people together, whether you’re commuting, heading to school, or simply enjoying the ride. It is also a good way to connect with nature and stay active.

A big shout-out to our City staff who stopped by to show their support. We loved seeing all of you, and we hope to welcome you back again next year!

Your hard work made a real impact. Together, you removed approximately 134 pounds of trash from our local waterways, contributing to a cleaner and healthier environment.

Your efforts were part of a much larger countywide effort. Across Santa Clara County, more than 730 volunteers cleared approximately 14,000 pounds of trash along 67 miles of waterways at 47 cleanup sites. Your participation helped make this possible.

Let’s keep making a difference.

Gracias, voluntarios.

Last week, three outstanding Gilroy residents were recognized by the California Parks and Recreation Society District IV for their remarkable dedication and service to our community.

Connie Rogers has been a cornerstone of the Gilroy Museum since 1998. As the Museum’s lead docent and a former President of the Gilroy Historical Society, Connie continues to preserve and share Gilroy’s history with passion and care.

At the Senior Center, Gloria Franco‑Moore has spent the last four years volunteering regularly and uplifting others. She’s an active participant in many senior programs—walking club, meditation, facial yoga, and tai chi—and is known for warmly welcoming newcomers and creating a sense of belonging.

Chris Chagoya has been a devoted volunteer with the Adaptive Program since 2012. Whether helping with clean‑up, leading the back of the line, or jumping in wherever needed, Chris is a reliable, friendly presence who strengthens the program through his steady support.

On Thursday, May 7, Connie, Gloria, and Chris joined members of the Recreation team at the annual California Parks and Recreation Society District IV Volunteer Appreciation Banquet in Campbell, where their contributions were celebrated among peers from across the region.

This year’s Annual Senior Resource Fair brought together our senior community for a warm, welcoming day of connection, learning, and support. Hosted by the Gilroy Recreation Division, the fair highlighted the meaningful role the Senior Center plays in bringing people together and enhancing quality of life through programs, services, and shared experiences.

Attendees explored a wide range of resources designed to promote well‑being, independence, and engagement. The City Clerk’s Office and the Communication and Engagement team were also on hand, offering voting information, answering election questions, and helping community members learn more about Gilroy’s new Council Voting Districts.

Events like this showcase the strength of our senior community, where neighbors support one another, discover new opportunities, and stay informed about what matters most.
