We extend our heartfelt sympathies to our brethren at the Kansas Highway Patrol and to Major Hogelin’s family. Our prayers are with you all.

It is with profound sadness that the Kansas Highway Patrol (KHP) mourns the passing of Major Brent Hogelin, who died unexpectedly on October 27, 2026, while off duty. Major Hogelin dedicated 27 years of service to KHP as a State Trooper. His passing is a tremendous loss to the Patrol and the law enforcement community. We extend our heartfelt condolences to his family, friends, colleagues, and all who served alongside him during his distinguished career.

Yesterday, the Crawford County Sheriff's Office joined with multiple area, state, and federal law enforcement agencies to conduct compliance checks on registered offenders in Crawford County ahead of the Halloween Weekend.

In all, we attempted contact with 180 registered offenders. 99 of these offenders were contacted and in compliance. 60 were unable to be contacted during our operation and will be contacted in the coming days.

11 registered offenders were placed under arrest for non-compliance (7 s*x offenders, 3 drug offenders, and 1 violent offender.) 8 others were found to have minor compliance issues and are having charges sent to the Crawford County Attorney's Office for review.

In addition, 1 arrest was made on a warrant for failing to appear, 1 was arrested for a parole violation, and a small amount of methamphetamine was seized.

We'd like to thank our law enforcement partners for assisting this in our operation:
Kansas Highway Patrol
U.S. Marshal's Service
Kansas Probation & Parole
Pittsburg Police Department
Frontenac Police Department
Girard Kansas Police Department
Arma Police Department
Cherokee Police Department
Mulberry Police Department

All suspects involved in this incident are considered innocent until proven guilty in court.

October 19 - 23 is National School Bus Safety Week!

If you've followed us for awhile, you've seen us talk about how seriously we take the safety and security of the children in our community. We've teamed up with area schools and other law enforcement partners to watch for school bus violations. Keeping our children safe is always a top priority for us, and it deserves more than a once-a-year reminder.

If a school bus is stopped with red lights flashing and the stop arm out - STOP and remain stopped until the bus moves and both the red lights and stop arm are deactivated. If you don't, things get real expensive real quick.

Thank you to the School Bus Drivers that keep our children safe during every single trip!
