The National Forest Foundation, chartered by Congress, engages Americans in community-based and national programs that promote the health and public enjoyment of the 193-million-acre National Forest System and administers private gifts of funds and land for the benefit of the National Forests. The Forest Service manages a system of 155 national forests, 20 national grasslands, and 222 research and experimental forests, as well as other special areas, covering more than 192 million acres of public land. The Forest Service has evolved into a 30,000 employee agency that manages the national forests for a number of multiple uses, including recreation, timber, wilderness, minerals, water, grazing, fish, and wildlife.

These past two weekends a pirate ship docked at Piney Campground bringing with it the Piney Plague! Pirates scoured the grounds as campers followed clues to unlock the riddles they were given as part of a treasure hunt. The staff at Piney provided a truly unique Halloween experience for their campers this year. ☠🎃

Wildlife Refuges in LBL will be closed November 1, 2026 through March 15, 2027. Refuge closures provide undisturbed resting and feeding areas for waterfowl, shorebirds, and eagles. Staff asks for public cooperation with refuge regulations designed to provide needed sanctuary. Signs are posted in these areas.
Included are:
-Portions of Duncan Bay, Smith Bay, and Rushing Bay on Kentucky Lake
-Fulton Bay and Honker Bay on Lake Barkley
-Western one-third of Energy Lake
-All of Energy Lake and Bards Lake are closed to hunting; eastern two-thirds of Energy Lake and all of Bards Lake remain open to fishing.
-Duncan Lake
-Long Creek Refuge at the back of Elbow Bay
-Hematite Lake and Honker Lake closed to fishing and boating; trails open
