🔥 BACKYARD BURNING OPENS OCTOBER 1ST 🔥
Backyard burning within the West Valley / Grand Ronde fire protection area reopens October 1st and is allowed through December 15th. This applies to small backyard debris piles only.
Before you burn, always check the daily burning authorization by calling:
📞 503-472-3344 or visiting the burn information website.
Even though we are moving into our wetter months, warm temperatures, low humidity, and windy conditions can still create unsafe burning conditions. Remember that an authorized burn day does not necessarily mean it is safe to burn at your location. Check current and forecasted weather conditions, including conditions expected over the following days. Fires that appear to be out can rekindle when warmer, drier, or windy weather returns.
🔥 Burn safely:
- Burn only dry, natural vegetation — never garbage, trash, plastics, or other prohibited materials.
- Keep debris piles small and manageable.
- Maintain a clear area around your burn.
- Keep water and firefighting tools, such as a shovel and rake, readily available.
- Never leave a fire unattended and make sure it is completely extinguished when finished.
🌲 ODF-protected lands: If your property is within an Oregon Department of Forestry protection district, ODF requirements still apply. Contact ODF at 503-934-8146 for permit and restriction information.
⚠️ The property owner is responsible and may be held liable for the fire and any damage caused if it escapes.
A few minutes of preparation can prevent a backyard burn from becoming an emergency. Check before you burn, stay with your fire, and burn responsibly.
