Halloween Safety Tips for Our Community
Halloween 2026 | Saturday, October 31

The Greenville Police Department would like to remind all citizens that Halloween should be a night of fun, excitement, and safe memories—not preventable tragedies.

As families prepare for trick-or-treating, we encourage parents, children, motorists, and homeowners to take a few extra precautions to help keep our community safe.
Safety tips for trick-or-treaters

1. Never trick-or-treat alone. Children should always be accompanied by a responsible adult or travel in a supervised group.
2. Wear bright or reflective clothing. Add reflective tape or carry a flashlight to increase visibility.
3. Stay in familiar neighborhoods. Visit well-lit homes and avoid dark or isolated areas.
4. Inspect all candy. Parents should examine treats before allowing children to eat them. Discard anything opened, tampered with, or suspicious.
5. Never enter a stranger's home or vehicle. Remain outside when collecting candy.
6. Look both ways before crossing streets. Use crosswalks when available, and never assume a driver sees you.
7. Keep your phone charged. Older children should have a way to contact their parents in an emergency.

Safety tips for motorists
1. Slow down in residential neighborhoods. Expect children to cross streets unexpectedly.
2. Put away your phone. Distracted driving can turn a fun evening into a tragedy.
3. Never drive impaired. Arrange for a designated driver if you plan to consume alcohol.
4. Use extra caution at intersections and between parked vehicles.
5. Be patient. Expect increased pedestrian traffic throughout Halloween evening.

Safety tips for homeowners
1. Keep walkways, steps, and porches well-lit and free of obstacles.
2. Secure pets to prevent accidental bites or frightening children.
3. Avoid decorations that obstruct sidewalks or create tripping hazards.
4. Keep vehicles locked, fi***rms secured, and valuables out of sight.
5. Report suspicious activity to law enforcement rather than confronting suspicious individuals.

A special reminder to parents
Know where your children are, who they are with, and when they are expected home. Establish a meeting location in case anyone becomes separated.

If you see something suspicious, say something. For emergencies, call 911.

Message from the Chief of Police

"Our children deserve to enjoy Halloween without fear, and every parent deserves the peace of mind of knowing their child is safe. I encourage everyone in Greenville to exercise good judgment, remain alert, and look out for one another. Remember, a few seconds of carelessness can result in a lifetime of consequences. Let's work together to make Halloween safe for every family in our city."

FROM THE DESK OF THE CHIEF

A MESSAGE TO PARENTS: KNOW WHERE YOUR CHILDREN ARE!

Parents, I want to share a serious message that comes from a place of genuine concern for the safety and well-being of our young people.

If you are not financially or emotionally prepared to face the unimaginable tragedy of burying your child, then I strongly encourage you to take a more active role in knowing where your children are, who they are associating with, and what they are doing—particularly during the late-night and early-morning hours.

The unfortunate reality is that some young people are engaging in criminal activities, including breaking into vehicles, homes, and businesses. These actions not only carry serious legal consequences but can also place their lives in immediate danger.

We must understand that not every person who becomes a victim of a crime will respond the same way. What some may consider a harmless thrill or an opportunity to steal could quickly escalate into a life-altering or even fatal encounter.

No parent should have to experience the heartbreak of planning a funeral, ordering memorial T-shirts, or establishing a GoFundMe account to bury a child whose death might have been prevented through better decisions, supervision, and guidance.

Parents, parenting does not stop when the sun goes down. Know your children’s whereabouts. Establish boundaries. Hold them accountable. Have the difficult conversations, and most importantly, teach them to respect the lives, property, and rights of others.

While we cannot control every decision our children make, we have a responsibility to provide the guidance, discipline, and supervision necessary to help them make better choices.

A few uncomfortable conversations and firm boundaries today could prevent a lifetime of heartache tomorrow.

Let’s be proactive in protecting our children rather than being forced to react to a tragedy.

Be present. Be involved. Be accountable. Their future—and possibly their lives—may depend on it.

GREENVILLE POLICE RECOVER STOLEN VEHICLE, FI***RM, AND SUSPECTED NARCOTICS DURING HOTEL INVESTIGATION

GREENVILLE, MS – On Wednesday, October 28, 2026, at approximately 11:20 p.m., an officer with the Greenville Police Department was conducting routine patrol in the 2500 block of Highway 82 East when he observed a vehicle believed to have been involved in a previous police pursuit on October 26, 2026, during which the driver evaded law enforcement.

The vehicle, identified as a 2025 Nissan Altima, was parked near a hotel room and appeared to be unoccupied. Upon further investigation, officers determined that the vehicle had been reported stolen through the Washington County Sheriff's Department.

Deputies with the Washington County Sheriff's Department responded to assist with the recovery of the stolen vehicle.

While officers were on the scene, they heard a female yelling from a nearby hotel room. Concerned for her safety, officers approached the room to conduct a welfare check.

During the welfare check, officers discovered a male subject, later identified as Andrew Williams, Jr., hiding underneath a bed. Williams was detained without further incident.

During the investigation, officers discovered suspected illegal narcotics and drug paraphernalia. A Nissan key fob found in Williams' possession was also determined to operate the recovered stolen vehicle.

Further investigation resulted in the recovery of:
• Suspected methamphetamine
• Drug paraphernalia, including glass pipes and digital scales
• A handgun
• A stolen 2025 Nissan Altima
• Burned copper wiring
• Bolt cutters and wire pliers
