Sometimes we’re asked what influenced our choices of color in the house.

The answer is simple, wherever we’ve found original color buried under newer paint or on a piece of repurposed woodwork, that is the color we used for the room.

This piece of wood found in the dining room dictated the color for the room.

Continuing work in the dining room.

Refitting original wood work is a challenge on the 1st floor because the depth of wall has changed.

In the late 18th century plaster was removed and nailing strips were added to allow wood lath and plaster. This pushed the wall out at least 1 1/2”.

I’ve taken it back so I can plaster over brick. Now I have to adjust wood work to new wall depth.

Making preps to install wood work in the dining room.

First step is to cut out nailer slots in the wall. Some are already there with pieces of wood still in place from 1740. Clean out old slots that were filled with mortar, and finally, create slots where none exists.

After that I install wood. I’m using cypress. I’ve tried pressure treated pine, but it doesn’t hold as well to the brick. The cypress bites to the brick better.
