Happy School Transportation Appreciation Day!

Our bus drivers are often the first faces our students see in the morning and the last ones they see at the end of the day. They play an important role in making sure our students get to and from school safely, while also building relationships with students along the way.

Many of our drivers also spend evenings and weekends transporting students to activities, athletic events, field trips, and other opportunities. Those early mornings, late nights, and extra miles do not go unnoticed!

A big thank you to our entire USD 440 transportation team for everything you do for our students, schools, and communities. We appreciate you!

October is National Principals Month, and we might be a little biased…but we’re pretty sure our principals are the best.

USD 440 is fortunate to have four outstanding principals leading our schools each day. They support students, encourage staff, solve problems, celebrate successes, handle the unexpected, and work tirelessly to make our schools better places to learn and grow.

Their leadership makes a difference across our entire district, and we are grateful for everything they do for our students, staff, families, and community.

Help us celebrate our four principals during National Principals Month! Great schools need great leaders—and USD 440 has four of the best.

The USD 440 Board of Education recently reviewed our 2025–26 state assessment results along with feedback from staff through our district needs assessment process. This work continues to help us make thoughtful, informed decisions about how we invest in our students and schools.

The Board adopted Budget Option #3, which includes a $100,000 transfer from contingency funds. This decision allows us to continue supporting identified district needs while also keeping the mill rate as low as possible.

2025–26 Mill Rate: 64.115
2026–27 Adopted Mill Rate: 64.442
Mill Rate without the contingency transfer: 65.751

The budget was approved unanimously, 7–0.

We are proud of the collaborative work happening across USD 440. Our Board and staff are committed to making responsible decisions, investing in student success, and being good stewards of the resources entrusted to us by our community. We look forward to continuing that work together throughout the 2026–27 school year!

🚸 Keeping Halstead’s Students Safe!

Halstead now has a Rapid Flashing Beacon (RFB) at 7th & Chestnut in our newly established school zone.

When activated, the amber lights flash to alert drivers that a pedestrian is crossing or waiting to cross. Drivers must stop and yield to pedestrians in the crosswalk.

This safety improvement was made possible through a Safe Routes to School Grant from KDOT.

🚦 Slow down. Be alert. Our kids are worth it!
Thank you for doing your part to keep Halstead’s students safe! 💙💛
