The Library will feature the work of Lauren Berman and Kathleen McCarthy-Udoff in the Orr Room.

Lauren Berman creates vibrant, hand-cut paper collages that tap into the sensations and memories of childhood. Her work is shaped by both her years teaching young children and her time as an associate archivist at The Jim Henson Company. She will be showing hand-cut paper collage and acrylic paintings. Visit Lauren Berman’s website here:
https://www.laurenbermanstudio.com/

Kathleen McCarthy-Udoff’s photography and mixed media explores nature’s rhythms—air, water, fire, and earth—and the harmony between freedom and form. Each piece featured is an act of listening: to beauty, to stillness, and to the unseen connections that shape us. She is a Tarrytown artist and educator. Visit Kathleen McCarthy-Udoff’s website here.

Narrative Resonance: A Haydn String Quartet & A Midsummer Night’s Dream
November 15
1:30 p.m.

How do Shakespeare and Haydn treat genre?

Haydn’s String Quartet in F Minor and Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream both complicate formal conventions and the distinctions between humor and pathos.

The Narrative Resonance series pairs works of classical chamber music and literature to explore artistic parallels and their relevance for contemporary audiences.

This 1-hour program will consist of a short lecture presenting textual and musical examples and a full performance of Haydnʼs Op. 20, No. 5 by Kvartet: Ezra Shcolnick, John Lee, Justinas Zlabys, and Miles Levine.

Narrative Resonance works in partnership with libraries, bookstores, art galleries, and high schools in the greater NYC area. For more information on Narrative Resonance visit www.vibhajanakiramanviolin.com/narrativeresonance

What you need to know:
Android Users: Starting Oct. 20, the new version arrives as an update to the app they already have.

If auto-updates are on in the Google Play Store, it will install on its own. If not, open the Play Store, search “WLS Mobile,” and tap Update.

Log in with your library card number and PIN.

iPhone & iPad Users: Starting Oct. 20 (today) you will need to download a new app called Solus Library App from the App Store.

After downloading, search for the Westchester Library System, and log in with your library card number and PIN.

What carries over?

Library card number, linked accounts, holds, and checkouts will all move over automatically.

You can make new lists in the app, but pre-existing lists & history won’t carry over. Don’t worry! They’re still in the catalog! You can view and edit those anytime by logging in to their library catalog in your phone (or iPad or computer) web browser at opac.westchesterlibraries.org

Local Luminaries: Nancy Felson, Solly Granatstein, Gregory Grene On Interpreting The Odyssey
October 15
7:00 p.m. – 8:15 p.m.

Since its release this summer, Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey has grossed nearly two billion dollars and has revived our collective discussions about this epic tale. But how loyal is the movie to the original? What has been lost among these changes? And what do we gain when an ancient story is retold? Our panel will guide us through these considerations and your own questions.

Nancy Felson is a Professor Emerita of Classics at the University of Georgia and the author of Regarding Penelope: From Character to Poetics.

Solly Granatstein is a 12-time Emmy-winning producer, director, and showrunner specializing in documentary programs.

Gregory Grene is a scholar of Foundational Texts and has taught The Odyssey to decades of high school and university students.
