Long before today’s transportation networks, railroads played an important role in Havana’s history, supporting local businesses, industry, and the movement of goods.

The first photo shows the Chicago & Illinois Midland Railway (C&IM) depot in Havana in 1966. The C&IM ran passenger trains until May 8, 1953, but railroad’s role in Havana went beyond passenger travel. The C&IM hauled coal to Havana’s riverfront, where it was transferred to barges on the Illinois River. This rail-to-river connection made Havana an important part of the regional coal transportation network due to C&IM’s dedicated coal-transfer facility at Havana.

The second photo gives us a glimpse of the Havana Metal Wheel Company, placed at what was once a highly industrial area of Havana. A 1916 U.S. patent identifies Carl B. Chandler of Havana as the inventor of a machine for forming metal wheel hubs from tubular metal blanks. The patent was assigned to the Havana Metal Wheel Company operating in the early 1900s with approximately 250 employees. An Illinois railroad commission report from 1912 mentions railroad switching services to specifically benefit the Metal Wheel Company.

From the railroad tracks to the factory floors, generations of hardworking men and women helped build the community we call home. That blue-collar spirit is part of this river town’s roots, and it’s a legacy worth being proud of.

Does anyone remember Havana in its prime railroad days?

Marketplace meetup safety - Before you meet, take a few precautions to protect yourself.

✔️ Meet in a public place. Choose a well-lit, busy location and avoid meeting at secluded locations or inviting strangers to your home.

✔️ Bring someone with you. If possible, have a friend or family member accompany you.

✔️ Tell someone your plans. Let them know where you’re going, who you’re meeting, and when you expect to be back.

✔️ Keep communication on the platform. Be cautious of buyers or sellers who pressure you to switch apps or provide personal information.

✔️ Trust your instincts. If something feels off or the other person changes the plan unexpectedly, don’t be afraid to cancel the meetup.

A little planning can go a long way in keeping a simple transaction from becoming a dangerous situation.

October range

This month’s range training covered a little bit of everything, including shooting on the move, reloads, elevated heart rate drills, malfunction clearing, precision shooting, and competition-style exercises using steel targets.

Consistent training, repetition, and pushing ourselves to work through different scenarios help keep our skills sharp and our officers prepared.

Package thieves, also known as porch pirates look for easy opportunities to steal packages left unattended. Here are a few reminders to protect your deliveries:

🔹 Install a Ring door camera or other front-door security camera to monitor deliveries and capture footage of suspicious activity.

🔹 Bring packages inside as soon as possible after delivery to avoid leaving them unattended.

🔹 Track your packages and use delivery notifications to know when your package arrives.

🔹 Arrange delivery to a secure location or ask a trusted neighbor to grab your package if you won’t be home.

Taking a few precautions can help prevent your packages from becoming an easy target.

Our Blue Line Benevolent Committee is officially back up and running!

The Blue Line Benevolent Foundation is a non-profit organization aimed at raising funds to create a better community for the citizens of Havana by hosting charitable events and creating projects that give back to the citizens we serve. Our goal is to bridge the gap between law enforcement and the city of Havana by providing community support.

We’re excited to get more involved in our community, support those in need, and find new ways to give back. Stay tuned for what’s ahead!
