Today, we recognize the incredible men and women who answer the call, no matter the time, weather, or circumstances.

To our EMTs, Advanced EMTs, Paramedics, Firefighters, Police Officers, Dispatchers, and all those who serve on the front lines, thank you.

Being a first responder is more than just a job. It's missing holidays, family dinners, and important moments to be there for someone else's worst day. It's long hours, difficult calls, and never knowing what the next call will bring.

At Lackawaxen EMS, we're proud to work alongside so many dedicated first responders who share the same goal: being there when our communities need us most.

To our own crews and our brothers and sisters across all emergency services, thank you for your dedication, compassion, sacrifices, and unwavering commitment to serving others.

Different uniforms. Different roles. One mission.

💙❤️💛 Happy National First Responders Day!

🚑 THE REVEAL IS HERE! DID YOU GUESS CORRECTLY? 👀

The mystery piece of equipment is our Masimo RAD-57 Pulse CO-Oximeter!

You may be wondering what makes this different from a regular pulse oximeter.

While the RAD-57 can measure a patient's oxygen saturation and pulse rate, it has another important feature. It can also estimate the amount of carbon monoxide (CO) in a person's blood!

🩸 Why is this important?

Carbon monoxide is a colorless, odorless gas that can be deadly. One of the biggest dangers is that someone experiencing carbon monoxide poisoning can still have a NORMAL oxygen reading on a standard pulse oximeter!

The RAD-57 gives our crews an additional tool to help identify possible carbon monoxide exposure, even when a patient's oxygen reading appears normal. Although it doesn't replace other medical testing, it provides valuable information when assessing a patient.

⚠️ Know the warning signs!

Symptoms of carbon monoxide poisoning can include headaches, dizziness, nausea, weakness, and confusion.

🏠 Safety Reminder: Make sure your home has working carbon monoxide detectors! If you suspect carbon monoxide poisoning, get everyone outside into fresh air immediately and call 911.

At Lackawaxen EMS, we're always looking for ways to provide the best possible care to our community. Equipment like the RAD-57 helps us recognize potentially life-threatening emergencies.

🚑 What exactly is an Advanced EMT?

Since 2023, Lackawaxen EMS has proudly provided Intermediate Advanced Life Support (iALS) care to Lackawaxen Township. Yet one question we still hear often is, “What is an Advanced EMT?”

Many people believe EMS has only two levels: EMT and Paramedic. In reality, Pennsylvania recognizes several levels of EMS providers, each with different training, skills, and responsibilities.

An Advanced EMT (AEMT) falls between an EMT and a Paramedic. AEMTs receive additional training to perform lifesaving interventions such as establishing IV access, administering certain medications, and providing advanced airway care within their scope of practice.

🚑 EMS Progression:
EMR → EMT → AEMT → Paramedic

Additional pathways include Prehospital Registered Nurses (PHRNs) and specialized EMS certifications.

💙 Our Progress, Our Future

Bringing iALS care to Lackawaxen Township in 2023 was an important milestone for our agency, but we're not stopping there! Our long-term goal is to eventually provide Paramedic-level Advanced Life Support (ALS) care directly to our township. We remain committed to growing our capabilities and improving emergency medical care for our community.

Every EMS provider plays a vital role, regardless of certification level. We all share one mission: providing the best possible care when our community needs us most.

Different Training. Same Mission.

🖤 Our hearts are heavy as we mourn the loss of Captain Lee Viola of Forest Volunteer Fire Department, Station 81.

Lee dedicated so much of his life to serving others, and his impact on the fire service and those who knew him will never be forgotten.

To our brothers and sisters at Station 81, please know that your Lackawaxen EMS family is hurting right alongside you. You're more than just another department we run calls with. You're our friends, our brothers and sisters, and our family.

We know how much Lee meant to all of you, and while there are no words that can make this loss any easier, we want you to know that you will never have to carry it alone.

Whether you need a shoulder to lean on, someone to talk to, or simply someone to stand beside you, we are here for you. Not just today, but in all the difficult days ahead.

Our deepest condolences go out to Lee's family, friends, and everyone at Forest Volunteer Fire Department and East Williston Park Fire Department.

Rest easy, Captain Viola. Your watch is over. We'll take it from here. 🚒

🖤 Station 81, we stand with you, we grieve with you, and we will always have your backs. Different patches, one family. Always.
