NOTICE TO HAZEL CREST RESIDENTS: DRONE DELIVERY IN THE SOUTHLAND

Noticing more drones overhead? Here’s what residents should know.

Amazon’s Prime Air drone delivery service is now operating in the south suburbs. As residents become more familiar with this service, the Village of Hazel Crest recognizes that questions about noise, privacy and safety may arise.

Who oversees drone flights?

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) regulates aviation safety and airspace use, including commercial drone flights. The Village cannot independently establish flight routes, impose a community-wide flight ban or regulate aircraft noise at its source. Applicable privacy and public safety laws still apply. (faa.gov)

How are packages delivered?

Amazon’s drones carry eligible packages weighing up to five pounds. During a routine delivery, the drone descends and releases the package at a selected delivery point without landing in the yard. Service availability depends on the address and delivery-area eligibility. (primeair.amazon, primeair.amazon)

What about cameras and privacy?

According to Amazon, onboard cameras and sensors help drones navigate, identify obstacles and complete deliveries. Amazon states that these cameras are used for navigation and are not viewed live by a person. (primeair.amazon)

Where should residents direct questions or concerns?

Amazon delivery, noise or property damage concerns: Email [email protected].

Drone safety concerns: Submit a report to the FAA at hotline.faa.gov.

An immediate threat to people or property: Call 911.

When reporting an issue, include the date, time, location and a description of what occurred.

The Village of Hazel Crest encourages residents to stay informed and use the appropriate reporting channels so concerns can be documented and addressed.
