The Mountain Community School We are a free public charter school in Henderson County, NC offering a unique K-8 education. D. Hirsch, Jr.

Small class sizes (18-20 students) allows more teacher/student contact time, and allows for a more individualized approach to each child's education. High expectations of students challenge and motivate them to excel academically within their own individual frameworks, and allows each student to make the most of their public school experience. Extensive parental involvement is central to the structure and success of The Mountain Community School. We have chosen curricula rich in content and strong in skills development, yet flexible enough to challenge children at all levels of ability. The foundation of the curriculum is the Core Knowledge Sequence (CKS), developed in conjunction with Dr. E. Core Knowledge provides a detailed outline of specific content to be taught in language arts, history and geography, math, science, and the fine arts. This curriculum has been shown to help students build a strong foundation of knowledge and a high level of cultural literacy in a coherent plan that builds year by year. Whether a child is considered "at risk" or "academically gifted", CKS offers an appropriately broad base of challenging knowledge to prepare them for successful higher learning. Any student eligible to attend public schools in Henderson County, NC, and who meets the age and grade requirements, is eligible to attend, subject to space availability. The Mountain Community School shall not discriminate against any student on the basis of ethnicity, national origin, age, gender, religion, or disability.

🚒🔥 First Grade visited Hendersonville Fire Department Station 1 as part of our study of community helpers and fire safety! Students toured the firehouse, learned how firefighters live and work while on duty, and got an up-close look at the equipment they use to keep our community safe.

A big thank you to the firefighters at Station 1 for welcoming us and sharing all about their important work! ❤️🚒

On the Friday half-day before the Fall Break, one 8th-grade Crew with Mr. O traveled to Frankie's of Greenville. There, the 8th graders enjoyed go-kart riding, as well as some other rides. The group was able to pay for the trip after arranging and hosting a car wash after school here at TMCS. Needless to say, the kids had a good time, Mr. O too.

On a recent Friday, the 7/8th-grade Wilderness Trekking Club went on a canoeing trip. They went paddling on Lake Summit thanks to Angie Evans giving the group access to the lake. While on the trip, the students got to practice and show off their learned skills of loading and offloading the canoes, paddling and steering, and how to deal with a canoe full of water while on the water. The kids enjoyed a floating lunch break, some splash wars, as well as an unplanned and planned swim break. Everyone had a good time and is looking forward to the next wilderness adventure.

Our first graders kicked off their field experiences for the year with an exciting trip to Jeter Mountain Farm!

3rd grade students were given popsicle sticks, paper, play dough, and tape. Their task was to create a house which would withstand hurricane like conditions. We used water and a fan to test out their creations. All houses withstood the test!
