“The kids here deserve the same quality of education as our kids in public schools." 🤝

Marcellus Bland is the principal of the Henrico-James River Juvenile Detention Education Program at the James River Juvenile Detention Center, where he and a staff of 15 work to educate a small group of students with unique needs.

He previously worked as a special education teacher and administrator at several Henrico schools and offices, including Fairfield Middle School, Henrico High School, Deep Run High School, Highland Springs High School and HCPS’ Department of Exceptional Education. All of these stops were formative in equipping him for his current role, and Bland said he "would not trade it for anything.”

As we conclude National Principals Month, learn more about the incredible work done by Bland and his staff at JRJDC!

She grew up through Henrico Schools at Montrose Elementary, Rolfe Middle and Varina High, and she's excited to serve a community that she's called home her entire life. YAY EGYPT WOODSON! Egypt Woodson, a registrar at Brookland Middle School, is today's Yay of the Day honoree! Superintendent Amy Cashwell honored her recently at Brookland! 👏

YAYWORTHY:

Her nominators, Roshonda Ballard, Flor Eberhard, Darin Freeman and Nicole Smith of the school counseling department, said,

"Our registrar is truly a Registrar Extraordinaire and is more than deserving of a Yay of the Day award! She is often one of the very first people our families encounter when they enter our school, and she has a remarkable ability to make everyone feel welcomed, valued and comfortable from the very beginning. Every day, she greets and assists countless families with patience, kindness, professionalism and an incredible wealth of knowledge. She understands that transitioning into a new school can sometimes feel overwhelming, but she goes above and beyond to make families feel seen, heard, and supported. She sets the tone for a positive and welcoming transition into our school community. Beyond her registrar responsibilities, she is a tremendous support to our school counseling department. She is truly the glue that helps hold our department together, helping us stay organized, informed and running efficiently while we work to address the many and varying needs of our students and families each day. Her willingness to step in, assist, problem-solve and keep things moving makes an incredible difference in our daily work.

"Her commitment to serving all families is especially admirable. She works diligently with families who speak different languages and never allows language or any other barrier to stand in the way of making someone feel welcome and supported. She finds ways to communicate, connect, and ensure that every family receives the assistance they need. She doesn't simply process paperwork or provide information—she builds connections, creates comfort, removes barriers, and makes people feel like they belong. Her work may happen behind the scenes at times, but the impact she makes is seen and felt throughout our entire school community. For her unwavering dedication, compassion, patience, expertise, and commitment to making every family feel welcomed and supported, we proudly nominate her as our Yay of the Day!"

Thank you for all you do, Egypt, to make a positive difference and move HCPS forward!

YAY ANDREA BRINKLEY! Andrea Brinkley, a school psychologist at Hungary Creek Middle School, Short Pump Middle School and Pemberton Elementary School, is today's Yay of the Day honoree! Superintendent Amy Cashwell honored her at Hungary Creek! 😄

YAYWORTHY:

Nominator Maryam Hadji said,

"She has exceptional dedication, compassion, and unwavering support for students, their families, and teachers.

"She consistently goes above and beyond to advocate for students, always provides thoughtful guidance and taking the time to explain everything clearly to parents so they feel informed and supported. We recently had a meeting for one of our students and the stepmom had many questions because she was not familiar with the special education eligibility process.
