Cooler days might be here to stay, but efficient irrigation practices should remain.

Make sure you continue to follow Hilton Head’s town ordinance on water use for irrigation — limiting irrigation to no more than twice per week, and ensuring your irrigation system has a working rain gauge.

Water savings shouldn’t be seasonal! Save water (and money) by following smart irrigation practices year-round.

Bats get a bad rap.

But these “spooky” creatures are actually great to have in your garden!

They’re a wonderful natural pest control — eating beetles and other bugs that might tear up your vegetable or flower garden.

They can also help pollinate night-blooming flowers and help disperse seeds.

If you want to encourage them to help with your garden, it’s another reason to add a pollinator garden to your landscape! (And you can always add a bat house!)

What’s scarier than a ghost?

A failing septic tank.

Failing septic systems risk your health and property. Human waste contains multiple dangerous pathogens that aren’t safe for the public health or the environment.

And where public sewer is available, repairs to failing septic systems are not allowed, nor may any new septic systems be installed, per DHEC regulations.

Which means if you’re not connected to the sewer system yet on Hilton Head Island, you can’t legally get your septic tank repaired if it fails.

So don’t wait til it breaks! Connect now.

PSA: Please don’t flush disposable/microfiber duster heads.

The PSD is currently seeing a troubling increase in disposable and microfiber duster heads, including products similar to Swiffer duster heads, being flushed into the sewer system.

These products belong in the trash, not the toilet.

Unlike toilet paper, microfiber cleaning products are designed to stay strong when wet. They do not quickly break apart as they travel through sewer pipes. Instead, they can become tangled around pumps and other wastewater equipment, contribute to blockages and require costly maintenance to remove.
