ICYMI: Rooted in Mākaha. Growing for generations. 🌱

When keiki learn on ʻāina, lessons can reach beyond the classroom. At Makaha Surfers, every grade visits Hoa ʻĀina O Mākaha weekly to explore farming, nutrition, and agriculture, and sometimes learn by making musubi or observing pollination. 🐝

The decades-long partnership gives students a safe place to connect with their community and the land. Hoa ʻĀina O Mākaha Executive Director Chelsey Jay, who grew up in Waiʻanae, says serving the community that raised her lets her put that love into action. Mākaha Elementary Principal Leslie Ziu, a Teach For America Hawaii 2012 alum, says students show curiosity, collaborate, and come alive in the farm’s outdoor learning space. ✨

As Teach For America Hawaii marks 20 years in Hawai’i and 35 years nationwide, Jay and Ziu see room to keep growing the partnership while honoring the work that came before. 🤎

The Sheraton Hawai'i Bowl, CFP Foundation | Extra Yard for Teachers and Teach For America Hawai‘i have again teamed up to support teachers via the Extra Yard For Teachers Grant Program. All current full time Hawai‘i public and charter school teachers are eligible to apply for this program.

This year awards will be made via DonorsChoose. Support from this program will be up to $1,000 per classroom project.

To increase the likelihood of your project being funded, please note the following:
-We will prioritize funding for teachers in Title 1 schools.
-We will prioritize projects that can be fully funded with $1,000 or less by Friday, December 4, 2026. As such, we encourage you to share your DonorsChoose project with your network, especially for projects requesting more than $1,000.

Deadline to apply: Applications are open now, with a closing deadline of Friday, November 20, 2026. But don’t wait—the sooner your project is posted, the higher likelihood you will receive support to complete your project.

ICYMI: Growing up in Hilo, Sunny always loved learning, but it was a handful of exceptional teachers who showed her what education could truly be. Today, as a 7th-grade English teacher and English Department Head at Pāhoa High and Intermediate School, she is helping create that same experience for her students. Sunny reflected on how her own educational journey, studies in sociology, and experience as a 2022 Teach For America Hawaiʻi corps member shaped her belief that all students can succeed when given the right support. She shared what makes a great teacher, the lessons she learned through TFA, and why building relationships and empowering student voice remain at the center of her work.
