Where Natural History Meets Art

Open by appointment and for special events from November - April: https://tinyurl.com/bovmvisit

Returning to Wednesdays - Sundays in 2027. Our Mission: to provide education, to nurture an appreciation of the environment, and to study birds and their habitats using woodcarvings and other museum resources.

“Stay gold Ponyboy, stay gold.”

As we enter stick season here in Vermont, the Museum changes from our regular “Open Season” to our “By appointment” season. If you and your friends or family want to visit the Museum over the next few months just give us a call, or sign up for an appointment on our website, birdsofvermont.org.

Don’t be shy, we love winter visitors. We will even turn the heat on for you!

Kay Johnson's background in child health policy gives her an insight into the small, the subtle, the fragile. This comes forth in her photography, which often offers a humble or surprising perspective. This American Coot is foraging in a human-built waterway; the title "Where is a Drop to Drink?" invites us to remember water quality and habitat availability.

There are several ideas wound together in this digital composite artwork, "Goose Gun", by Nancy Anisfield. What stories does this tell, what reactions do you have, knowing it is part of ?

One last special event for this year's open season: a Carve-in! Many woodcarvers will be at the museum this coming Saturday, October 31, for their monthly carve-in. Drop by to chat with woodcarvers, tour the permanent collection of lifelike birds, and explore the last day of the Wings•Waters•Ways art show.

Birds can’t vote, but you can.

Jake Kehs uses play, hyperbole, and satire in his work to draw attention to the effects of "civilization" on the rest of the world. Here, you can tug the cord of the Common Merganser and allow it a moment of flight in the art show. What does it mean, to puppet a bird?

It's almost time for the October Bird Monitoring Walk! Fall and Winter bird walks can be great for beginners as we can focus on behavior and have less foliage blocking our views.

Meet at the museum on Halloween at 8:00 am. Bird costumes not required (but will earn you a small treat.)

Registration and donations welcome: https://birdsofvermont.org/event/oct-2026-bird-monitoring-walk/

So much conservation started with the love of — or the obsession with — egret plumes. David Pearson reminds us of this with "Do You Love Me Now?"for
