Earth Discovery Center Eagle Creek Park is part of the City of Indianapolis, Indianapolis Parks and Recreation.

The goal of the Eagle Creek Earth Discovery Center is to introduce visitors to the amazing diversity of plants and animals native to Indiana and foster a sense of wonder, enthusiasm, and stewardship for the natural world. With 1400 acres of water and 3900 acres of forest, Eagle Creek Park is one of the largest city parks in the nation, offering unmatched opportunities for exploration, enjoyment, and discovery of nature only minutes from downtown Indianapolis. The Earth Discovery Center is one of two nature centers in the park, and offers field trips for schools, scouts, and other groups, family programs, teacher trainings, summer daycamps, and more! In addition, the EDC is a great place to stop by and enjoy exhibits containing live, native reptiles, amphibians, and fish, natural history information about native wildlife, displays of insects and plants, a backyard habitat area and seasonal displays, several nearby hiking trails, as well as beautiful deck with a view of Eagle Creek Reservoir. The Eagle Creek Ornithology Center focuses on birds and bird watching, and offers a variety of educational opportunities including live bird of prey programs. Both facilities are free with park admission, and are open 10am-5pm, Monday-Saturday, 1pm-5pm Sunday (closed for most city holidays).

Thanks to funding from the Lilly Endowment, the park is now receiving exciting new playground upgrades that will make it an even more inviting place for the community to enjoy.

Happy Reptile Awareness Day!

We’ve had several visitors stop by the Earth Discovery Center to report sightings of a coyote in the area, and yesterday we managed to get it on video!

Coyotes tend to be more nocturnal in urban areas, but they can actually be active any time of day. We see signs of coyotes (tracks, s**t, fur) by the Earth Discovery Center year round, but this one was out at 11am, on a busy day with several cars and people around.

Because it seemed fairly bold and habituated to people, the naturalist stopped and approached the coyote to assess its behavior. When approached, the coyote showed appropriate wariness to humans and immediately headed away and into the forest, which is exactly the behavior we want to see!

Here are some tips to keep our coyotes wild and safe in the park:
1. Don’t try to feed or throw food at coyotes - we don’t want them to associate food with people.
2. If a coyote is too close to you and you want it to go elsewhere, make noise, yell or clap your hands, and move towards the coyote. The exception is during the breeding and denning season, late winter through spring: if a coyote is not backing down or moving away it may be protecting a den with pups, so give them some space.
3. Keep dogs on leash. While coyote attacks on humans are extremely rare, coyotes are predators and small pets may look like prey. We are not aware of any incidents with coyotes at the park, but if you are concerned consider carrying an airhorn or other loud noisemaker.

Did you know:
Coyotes range between 20-50 pounds.
Although they look similar to a German shepherd, they carry their tail below the height of their back instead of curved upward.
Coyotes are found throughout Indiana, in every habitat - you probably have some living near you even if you never see them!
Coyote s**t is similar to dog s**t, but usually contains fur and bone fragments.
Wolves have not been found in Indiana since 1908, with the exception of a yearling male wolf from a Wisconsin pack found dead in east-central Indiana in 2003.

Video description:
A healthy looking coyote trots along the edge of a green lawn in the sunlight, stopping to sniff the ground. When the naturalist taking the video gets out of the car and begins walking towards the coyote, it immediately changes direction and heads away and into the forest.
