On October 19, an Amador County jury found Defendant Christopher Castillo guilty of two counts of a violation of Penal Code 4502(a) -custodial possession of a weapon. Following their verdict, the jury found true that the defendant had a prior strike offense, and the special factors in aggravation were also found to be true. Because of that guilty verdict and those findings, the defendant faces up to 10 years in prison at sentencing, which will occur on October 30, 2026.

During two incidents that occurred on May 15 and November 20, 2024, Mr. Castillo was serving a sentence at Mule Creek State Prison in Ione. Evidence at trial established that he had inmate-created weapons with him on both dates. The May incident involved officers responding to a call of a possible fire in the defendant’s cell, and after he was removed from the cell, he was searched, and a weapon was found in the pocket of his clothes. The November incident involved the defendant refusing to enter his cell after being ordered to do so due to a medical emergency alert in the building. While correctional staff attempted to talk him into entering his cell, the defendant began to pull what was later determined to be another inmate-created weapon out of his pocket. Officers took custody of that weapon immediately and searched the defendant, which resulted in finding a second inmate-created weapon.

The Amador County District Attorney's Office is thankful for the correctional staff and the Investigative Services Unit at Mule Creek State Prison, our Bureau of Investigation, and our office support staff for their teamwork in supporting justice in this case.

UPDATE: Arraignment occurred with the defendant entering pleas of 'not guilty' and denials of enhancements. Bail was set at no bail. Pre-preliminary hearing will occur on December 2, 2026.

The District Attorney's Office filed a complaint charging Michael Patrick O'Riley II, age 39, of Jackson, with the following felony charges in the death of Kylene Douglas, who was killed in her home in Jackson in the early hours of October 14, 2026:

Ct. 1: Willful, deliberate, premeditated murder, with an enhancement for the discharge of a fi***rm causing the death of another person
Ct. 2: Cruelty to an animal
Ct. 3: Possession of a fi***rm by a felon
Ct. 4: Possession of am******on by a felon
Ct. 5: Violation of a domestic relations court order

The defendant is also alleged to have two prior serious felony convictions, or "strikes," both of which resulted in prison sentences, including his most recent conviction from San Joaquin County. He was released by CDCR in early 2026. Both the victim and the defendant alike were subject to court orders, issued after hearings, for peaceful contact with each other.

The District Attorney's Office is committed to seeking justice for Kylene and her grieving family. We will prosecute the defendant and hold him accountable to the fullest extent of the law. Domestic violence plagues every community, and tragically, victims continue to need resources, understanding, and protection. We are particularly appreciative of the work that our Victim Witness advocates and community advocates do every day and night to prevent more violence. If you or someone you know needs help, please call Victim Witness at (209) 223-6474 or Operation Care at (209) 223-2897.

October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month 💜

Every person deserves to feel safe, respected, and valued in their relationships. Domestic violence can happen to anyone—regardless of age, gender, or background—but together, we can break the cycle.

This month, we stand with survivors, honor those we’ve lost, and commit to building a community where love is safe.

If you or someone you know needs help, call our local Domestic Violence and Sexual Assault nonprofit agency, Operation Care Amador County's 24 Hour support line at (209)223-2600. If you or someone you know lives outside of Amador County, the National Domestic Violence Hotline at 1‑800‑799‑SAFE (7233) or text “START” to 88788.

Since September 1st, we have received notice of our success in THREE separate opposition efforts to prevent the early parole of dangerous individuals:

The first individual to be denied, Joshua Elvers, 38, is serving a State prison sentence of 3 years for a Felony violation of Penal Code section 4502(a), Custodial Possession of a Weapon, and has an extensive criminal history that includes convictions of a felony violation of Penal Code section 288(a), Lewd Acts on a Child Under 14, a felony violation of Penal Code 290.015(a), Failure to Register, as well as a felony violation of Penal Code section 29800(a)(1), Felon in Possession of a Fi***rm.

Derek Maydole, 44, is currently serving a prison sentence for a felony violation of Penal Code section 4502(a), Possession of a Weapon in a Penal Institution, and has criminal history dating back to 2001, including multiple felony weapons possession violations and dissuading a witness or victim.

Last but not least, Douglas Jeffcrum, 27, is currently serving a sentence for six (6) felony convictions and one (1) misdemeanor conviction arising from two separate court cases adjudicated in 2024. Some of his felony charges include Penal Code section 29800(a)(1), Felon in Possession of a Fi***rm, Vehicle Code section 10851(a), Driving or Taking Vehicle Without Consent, and Vehicle Code 2800.4, Fleeing A Pursuing Police Officer’s Motor Vehicle and Driving Against Traffic.

All of these individuals share a long-standing record of criminal activity and must complete their time in custody before returning to society. Our office will continue to do everything within our power to prevent early release. Even when they're not in the courtroom, our attorneys are working diligently to keep our community safe.
