What a great weekend at Puʻuwaʻawaʻa!

HWMO was excited to participate in the 19th Annual Run for the Dry Forest at Pu‘uwa‘awa‘a this past Saturday, joining runners, families, conservation partners, and community members in celebrating Hawaiʻi Island's precious dryland forests!

Our team hosted an outreach table, sharing wildfire prevention and preparedness resources and talking story with attendees about ways we can all help reduce wildfire risk.

We also had some special feathered friends join the fun! HWMO's very own Kaleo the Pueo was out and about alongside Pono the Nēnē from the Hawaii DLNR (Department of Land and Natural Resources) Division of Forestry and Wildlife (DLNR-DOFAW). Together, these two helped bring some extra excitement to the event while connecting with attendees of all ages!

Hawaiʻi's dryland forests are home to rare and endangered native species, and wildfire remains a significant threat to these unique ecosystems. Protecting these landscapes takes ongoing conservation, thoughtful land management, and a shared commitment to wildfire prevention.

Mahalo to the Akaka Foundation for Tropical Forests, event organizers, volunteers, and everyone who stopped by our table! We're grateful to be part of an event that brings people together to celebrate and protect Hawaiʻi's natural resources.
