Today, we solemnly mark the 15th anniversary of the line-of-duty death of Kent Firefighter/Paramedic Don Beckett.

On October 19, 2011, Don passed away following a courageous 10-month battle with a rare, job-related cancer. Fifteen years later, not a day goes by that we don’t think of Don, his sacrifice, and the lessons he shared with those who were honored to work beside him.

Don began his career with the Kent Fire Department on August 27, 1988, serving first as a fire inspector in the Fire Prevention Bureau before becoming a full-time Firefighter/Paramedic.

“Doctor Don,” as he affectionately became known, was the paramedic you wanted answering your 911 call and the partner you wanted beside you during a serious emergency. He combined exceptional skill with genuine compassion. He understood that being there for someone meant both knowing what to do and caring enough to hold their hand. His example continues to set a standard we strive to uphold each day.

We still miss his infectious laugh, his huge smile, his friendship, and his steady guidance.

Just a couple of months before his passing, we presented Don with a retirement plaque. Its words remain as meaningful today as they were then:

“When confronted by a serious fire, we will feel your ‘push’ to go further. When treating a frightened elderly patient, we will feel your ‘urge’ to hold their hand. Your impact, although cut way too short, was profound and everlasting. And for that, we will be forever grateful to have worked in your shadow…Thank you, Brother!”

Above all, Don cherished his wife, Heidi, his daughter, Christy, and his son, Ryan. His family was everything to him. A humble man of God, he lived his Christian faith through his love for his family and his care for others. We admired him as a firefighter and paramedic, and just as deeply as a husband, father, and friend. His spirit of service carried forward through Christy and Ryan in nursing and law enforcement.

Don’s family remains a close and integral part of the Kent Fire Department family. The bonds built through his life and strengthened through his loss have endured. To Heidi, Christy, Ryan, and the entire Beckett family: we remember with you, we love you, and we remain beside you.

Fifteen years later, Don’s lessons still guide us, his sacrifice remains in our hearts, and his place in this family is forever.

Never forgotten, Brother. ❤️

The Kent Fire Department congratulates Gary Stone on his swearing-in as Chief of the Kent Police Department at tonight’s City Council meeting.

Chief Stone was surrounded by colleagues from the Kent Police Department, Lakewood Police Department, Brooklyn Police Department, Kent State University Police Department, and Lakewood Fire Department, a wonderful reflection of the relationships and respect he has built throughout his career.

We value the strong partnership between our departments and look forward to continuing to serve the Kent community alongside Chief Stone and the dedicated members of KPD.

Congratulations, Chief Stone, this honor is well deserved! 🚒🤝🚓

The Kent Fire Department was able to get more information on what transpired in the Twinsburg explosion, and the city administration has issued a notice to temporarily suspend right of way permits for any directional boring work in Kent out of an abundance of caution.

City Fire Department staff are in the process of hand delivering the suspension notices to the fiber companies this afternoon. Those notices are effective immediately and remain in place until otherwise notified.

In case any work occurs over the weekend, Police and Fire staff have been briefed and if they receive any calls, they have been advised how to respond.

It’s important to note that the fiber contractors have plenty of other installation work besides directional boring to do so residents may see fiber crews still working on the fiber installation – that’s allowed – it’s just directional boring that is temporarily prohibited.

Here’s an example of the kind of directional boring equipment that has been suspended.

Thank you, Kent!

We had a great turnout today for our Touch-A-Truck event at Kent Fire Station 1, and we are so grateful to everyone who came out to visit with us.

It was wonderful to see so many families, kids, neighbors, and future firefighters walking through the station, checking out the trucks, and spending time with members of the Kent Fire, Police, and Service Departments.

As we celebrate 150 years of service, we want our community to know something important:

These firehouses belong to you, too.

They are not just buildings where firefighters work. They are places of service, safety, help, and welcome. They are places your children should feel comfortable walking into. Places where our neighbors can come when they need help, have a question, or just want to know the people who serve this city.

We are proud to serve Kent, and days like today remind us exactly why.

Thank you again to everyone who came out, and thank you for continuing to support your Kent Fire Department.
