On September 28, 1976 the last train serving the Catskill Mountains left Kingston bound west over the old tracks of the Ulster & Delaware Railroad. The Conrail locomotive that pulled the train bore a sign commemorating the event that had been painted by Daily Freeman photographer Bob Haines and his daughters, making for a striking photo op that Bob's friend, local historian and documentary photographer Gene Dauner, captured at several scenic points along the route. Historians have debated the significance of this event over the fifty years that have elapsed since that day, often emphasizing the story as one of loss and bureaucratic failings that remain a disservice to the rural communities and industry that relied on rail infrastructure. In the clerk's office, some of the trappings from this day also share a different story, and it is one of community mindedness and the importance of the preservationist spirit. The photos that accompany this post showing that day in 1976 represent a very small part of a 19,000-image collection presented to us by Gene Dauner, who spent much of his life capturing scenes of change and transformation throughout the Hudson Valley and Catskill Mountains. In much the same spirit of preservation that drove Gene to capture these photos during the 1960s, '70s, and '80s, he approached the clerk's office in 2024 looking to make his life's work part of the public record. These photos now reside in the care of the Clerk's archives, enshrined as part of a repository of over 340 years of our region's history thanks to one person's spirit of public mindedness. Appropriately, on a nearby shelf, the "Last Train" sign sits awaiting conservation thanks to the same spirit of public generosity by the family of the late Bob Haines. Today is just another day in the long march of history, but its as good a day as any to celebrate the study of the past, those who help preserve it, and to consider the ways you might work towards preserving some of the stories of your own family or community.

Good afternoon, all! Some of our Municipal Historian friends asked if we could follow up on our recent history post with the rest of the images from Deed Book EE showing brands applied to barrels of flour by local merchants between 1751 and roughly 1795. Here are all the pages, the citation being "Ulster County Book of Deeds EE, pages IX-XVI." These pages follow the indexes at the front of the book but appear before the regularly numbered deed entries.

A fun find from our archives this afternoon is this page from Deed Book EE recording brands applied to barrels of flour by local merchants starting in 1751. Following a law passed by the General Assembly of the Province of New York in 1750 all merchants were required to brand their flour casks to prevent fraud and create greater accountability for products exported from the colony. These hand-drawn renditions were recorded by the clerks and deputy clerks of Ulster until the eve of the Revolutionary War.
