Historic Kirtland Historic Kirtland is a place of revelation, where priesthood keys were bestowed, and the location of the Latter-day Saints’ first temple.

Historic Kirtland, in Kirtland, Ohio, includes a visitors’ center and six historic structures open for guided tours: a schoolhouse, a sawmill, an ashery, the Newel K. Whitney and Company store, Newel and Ann Whitney’s home, and the Johnson Inn, which now houses historical exhibits. They tell about experiences of early members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints who gathered in Kirtland in the 1830s.

What does it mean to be a light unto the world?

The Savior made it clear that part of being a light was to let others “see your good works” (Matthew 5:16).

Sometimes in our efforts to be humble we do not appropriately let people know that we are members of the Lord’s Church and follow His teachings.

There are many ways to do this. I shared during yesterday's worldwide devotional that living lives of integrity and virtue will be most important. Who you are is the key.

Light is most powerful when it is consistent and reliable—such as a lighthouse or a candle in a dark room.

It does not matter if your light feels small. “Out of small things proceedeth that which is great” (Doctrine and Covenants 64:33).

As we consider how to be a light, there is one path that is most sure: It is to learn of the Savior and strive to become like Him.

My counsel to you is to focus on Jesus Christ, the Savior of the world. He is the Light of the World, the true source of light and peace.

“Growing up, it was always God, family, and baseball. There were a lot of late nights practicing, a lot of traveling, and sometimes it was hard to get to church. But my parents helped me build a foundation on a testimony of the gospel of Jesus Christ.

“I always had a testimony, but I hadn’t read the Book of Mormon all the way through. I believed what my parents told me. They’re really smart, and their testimonies are strong. Then I got drafted, and I thought, ‘All right, I probably need to read this for myself.’

“One of the guys I was drafted with shared my faith. We became roommates and studied the scriptures together. As I read, I received personal revelation. That’s when my testimony really became stronger. I could see Heavenly Father’s hand in putting someone like that in my life.

“Reading helped me strengthen my testimony, and living what I believed gave me more opportunities to recognize His hand.

“My mom had talked to me about tithing before I even had a job. She told me about the blessings she’d seen and encouraged me to pay it. So I did. As I’ve kept that commitment, I’ve learned that the blessings can be physical, too. For me, being able to play baseball at my best is a blessing I connect directly to paying my tithing.

“Playing at an elite level still has its ups and downs. After a good year, I had a rough year. Sometimes you’re asking Heavenly Father, ‘Please help me,’ and you forget how much He’s already helped. Looking back helped me recognize the opportunities and blessings He had already given me.

“That same commitment to living my faith carries into how I take care of myself. Living the Word of Wisdom is a choice I made early. I’ve never wanted to drink or smoke. In high school, I watched people try va**ng, get addicted, and struggle to stop. I didn’t want to find myself in that situation, and I’m grateful I made that decision before I ever started playing professionally."

“So when we were celebrating with the team and there wasn’t any sparkling c***r, I opened the fridge, saw some Fanta in glass bottles, and grabbed a couple. I didn’t even want to hold alcohol because I didn’t want to give the impression I was drinking it. Then everybody started sending me pictures of their Fanta.

“Reading the Book of Mormon, paying my tithing, and living the Word of Wisdom are commitments I carry with me. As I’ve lived them, the foundation my parents helped me build in the gospel of Jesus Christ has become stronger through my own experiences.

“Heavenly Father has really shown His hand in my life.”

“I grew up in a traditional Chinese home where my family worshipped by honoring our ancestors with incense. I participated because it was part of our culture, but I never felt truly connected to it. Even being young, I knew there was a God watching over me, but I didn’t know who He was.

"I was 17 when I first met with the missionaries, and it wasn’t long after that when a member family invited me to a three-day youth conference. While I was there, I realized that the God I had always believed in but never truly known was real.

“I told my family I wanted to join the church and someday serve a mission. They didn’t really understand at first, and it was difficult for all of us. But with God’s help and support, I was able to be baptized, and a few years later serve a mission in Taipei. The plan of salvation became the doctrine that was the foundation of my testimony. Knowing I can have an eternal family and return to my Heavenly Father again gives me peace and purpose.

“My faith has grown through my personal challenges as well. Not too long ago, there was a period where despite praying, reading scriptures, and going to the temple, I felt alone and couldn’t feel happiness. A friend that had carried the same struggles shared her experiences with me and how doing the small, simple things helped her over time. Her story was encouraging to me. I knelt and prayed to God, ‘I feel broken. I don’t know how to fix myself.’ As I prayed, I thought of Jesus Christ in Gethsemane and realized in a deeper way that He truly understands every pain we face. Feeling His love helped me slowly find peace again.

“I’ve learned that having faith in God and in ourselves is what carries us. God believes in us even when we don’t always believe in ourselves. I try to show that same love to those around me by understanding them and being a peacemaker, just as He would. I know Heavenly Father knows us personally. I know Jesus Christ walks with us through every trial and I’m grateful every day for the chance to follow Him.” —Shilin
