We had the pleasure of spending National First Responder’s Day with our local emergency services for a hands on bus extrication training tonight.
We’d like to give a big shout out and thank you to a few individuals that have helped put this together.
First we’d like to thank Chris Rogne and the Lake Mills Community School District for allowing us to utilize a retired school bus for this training.
Michel Wallin and Terry Ringham for teaching us some important information pertaining to buses, the layout, how to identify the power source (gas or LP), and where to locate some useful information. Also to Terry for coordinating the utilization of the bus.
Thank you to heavy tow operator David King with Tony’s towing in Clear Lake for coming up to Lake Mills to help setup our scenario today and haul the bus away once we were done with it.
Thank you to LMFD training officer Logan McCormick for coordinating the training topics with me to help provide hands on scenarios that allowed for further discussion pertaining to handling situations that may involve mass casualty incidents (MCI) with multiple patients.
Lastly, I think, thank you to David’s Market for catering chili and chicken noodle soup with homemade buns to feed everyone after. It was delicious!
Thank you to the surrounding agencies that participated, we hope you were able to learn something or take something away from this training that can lead to further trainings and discussions and we look forward to more opportunities to train with all of you and others.
Using a bus extrication as a training was a good hands on learning experience to explore what it may look like for an MCI, setting up incident command, triaging patients for the likelihood that the bus may be loaded, and for managing those patients after extrication. Being able to work through high-acuity calls with a low frequency of occurring, like this one, helps us freshen up on our skills and prepare for the unthinkable.
As a community, we’re blessed to have the agencies that we have and being able to work so well together when time calls on us to handle the heavy situations.
Thank you Lake Mills Iowa Police Department and Lake Mills Iowa Fire Department - LMFD for the services you provide.
Happy National First Responder’s Day!
