⏰ CHANGE YOUR CLOCK, CHANGE YOUR SMOKE DETECTOR BATTERY! 🔋

As we turn our clocks back this weekend, the Algonquin-Lake in the Hills Fire Protection District reminds everyone to take a few minutes to check your smoke alarms and keep your family safe!

When you change your clocks, remember to:

✅ Change the batteries in your smoke alarms and carbon monoxide (CO) detectors, if applicable.

✅ Test your alarms to make sure they are working properly.

✅ Check the expiration dates. Smoke alarms don't last forever and should be replaced according to the manufacturer's recommendations, generally every 10 years.

✅ Make a plan. Ensure everyone in your household knows two ways out of every room and has a designated meeting place outside.

🚒 A working smoke alarm can provide the early warning you need to get out safely in the event of a fire. Don't wait until it's too late!

A few minutes today can make a lifesaving difference tomorrow.

Stay safe, Village of Algonquin, Illinois and Village of Lake in the Hills!

🚒 Protecting Those Who Protect Our Community!

The health and safety of our firefighters is always a priority at the Algonquin-Lake in the Hills Fire Protection District.

We recently brought in Redline Gear Cleaning to professionally clean our firefighters’ turnout gear, helping remove harmful contaminants, carcinogens, and other hazardous substances that can accumulate during emergency responses.

Every fire, vehicle accident, and emergency response can expose our firefighters to dangerous contaminants that may remain embedded in their protective clothing long after the incident is over. Proper cleaning and maintenance of turnout gear is an important part of reducing that exposure and protecting our members from the long-term occupational risks of the job.

Because protecting our firefighters is just as important as protecting the community they serve.

🚑 New AEDs Added to Our Fleet! ❤️

The Algonquin-Lake in the Hills Fire Protection District is proud to announce the addition of new Stryker Emergency Care Automated External Defibrillators (AEDs) to our Basic Life Support (BLS) apparatus and staff vehicles, made possible through the Illinois State Fire Marshal’s Small Equipment Grant Program free-of-charge to the District!

While all of our frontline ambulances and fire apparatus operate at the Advanced Life Support (ALS) level, meaning they are equipped with advanced life-saving equipment and staffed with at least one paramedic at all times, these additional AEDs provide another important tool for our crews when responding to medical emergencies.

AEDs are a critical piece of equipment when treating patients experiencing sudden cardiac arrest. Having this equipment readily available helps our crews deliver timely, potentially lifesaving care when every second counts.

This grant allows us to expand access to this important equipment across our fleet and further strengthen our commitment to providing high-quality emergency medical services to the communities we serve.

We are grateful to the Illinois State Fire Marshal for investing in local fire departments and helping us continue to enhance the safety and care we provide to our residents.

Equipping our crews. Strengthening our response. Saving lives. ❤️🚒

🚧 Sewer Smoke Testing in the Village of Algonquin

This week, the Village of Algonquin, Illinois will be conducting sewer smoke testing in various areas throughout the Village to assess sewer conditions.

We have been receiving calls daily from residents who are noticing smoke inside their homes as a result of this testing. Please be assured that the smoke used during this process is non-hazardous to occupants and is only temproary.

The testing may cause smoke to enter homes through plumbing fixtures, floor drains, or other openings connected to the sewer system. While this can be alarming if you’re unaware of the testing, it is an expected part of the process.

🚒⚡ FIRE PREVENTION WEEK 2026 — DAY 5 ⚡🚒

🔥 CHARGE INTO FIRE SAFETY!

Today’s message: Don’t overload your outlets.

With more devices than ever needing power, it can be tempting to plug everything into one power strip or extension cord. But overloaded or improperly used electrical equipment can create a serious fire hazard.

⚡ Keep your home powered safely:

🔌 Never overload outlets, power strips, or extension cords.

🚫 Never plug one power strip or extension cord into another.

🔥 Replace cords that are frayed, cracked, damaged, or hot to the touch.

💡 Use power strips with built-in overload protection when appropriate—but remember, a power strip does not increase the amount of electricity an outlet can safely provide.

🏠 High-powered appliances such as space heaters, microwaves, and toaster ovens should be plugged directly into a wall outlet unless the manufacturer specifically allows otherwise.

👀 If an outlet, cord, or power strip becomes hot, discolored, or starts making unusual sounds, stop using it and have it inspected by a qualified electrician.

⚡ TODAY'S FIRE SAFETY MESSAGE:

Your outlet has a limit. Know it, respect it, and don't overload it.

This Fire Prevention Week, the Algonquin-Lake in the Hills Fire Protection District is helping our residents Charge into Fire Safety—one safe choice at a time.

🚒 Power safely. Charge safely. Stay safe.

🚒🔥 FIRE PREVENTION WEEK 2026 — DAY 4 🔥🚒

🍳 CHARGE INTO FIRE SAFETY!

Today’s message: Stay in the kitchen when you cook.

Cooking is one of the leading causes of home fires—and many cooking fires can be prevented with one simple habit:

👀 KEEP YOUR EYES ON WHAT'S COOKING.

Whether you're making a quick breakfast or preparing dinner for the whole family:

🔥 Never leave cooking unattended. If you need to step away, turn off the burner.

🧤 Keep anything that can burn—towels, oven mitts, paper, packaging, and curtains—away from the stovetop.

🍳 Turn pot and pan handles inward so they can't be accidentally knocked over.

🧯 Keep a lid nearby when cooking on the stovetop. If a small grease fire starts, slide the lid over the pan, turn off the burner if it is safe to do so, and leave the pan covered until it is completely cool.

🚫 NEVER use water on a grease fire. Water can cause burning grease to splatter and spread the fire.

📞 If a fire gets out of control, get everyone outside and call 911.

🚨 TODAY'S FIRE SAFETY MESSAGE:

Stand by your pan. Stay in the kitchen. Prevent the fire before it starts.

This Fire Prevention Week, the Algonquin-Lake in the Hills Fire Protection District is reminding our residents to Charge into Fire Safety!

🚒 Stay alert. Stay safe. And never leave cooking unattended.

🚒 Charge into Fire Safety—make your charging space a safe space.
