The Board of Commissioners last night discussed the future of fire service in Upper Gwynedd.

The discussion followed nearly three years of review of fire service by the Commissioners, Township staff and the Fire Department. That work included a careful review of the Regional Fire Services Study conducted through the Pennsylvania Department of Community and Economic Development in partnership with Ambler Borough, Lower Gwynedd Township, and North Wales Borough.

The study confirmed challenges that fire departments throughout our region and across the country are facing: fewer available volunteers, especially during weekday hours; increasing call volumes; rising costs; and the need to plan now for a reliable and sustainable response system.

The Commissioners reiterated that safety is, and always will be, the Township's priority. As part of an effort to be proactive and address challenges now, the Commissioners announced the Township will include a fire chief and paid fire staff in the 2027 budget.
