Today, November 2nd marks the start of Crash Responder Safety Week. Every few seconds, a traffic incident responder puts their life on the line to aid crash victims and to safely and quickly clear crashes as well as other traffic incidents that could otherwise result in a secondary crash. Every year traffic incident responders are killed in the line of duty or bear life-long scars from life-altering injuries.

The Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) began commemorating Crash Responder Safety week (CRSW) in 2016, now annually, it takes place in November. CRSW affords a unique opportunity for every Traffic Incident Management (TIM) community member to make a difference individually and jointly for roadway safety during traffic incidents.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

UVLSRPC RECEIVES GRANT FROM US DOT

Lebanon, NH (11/2/2026) – The Upper Valley Lake Sunapee Regional Planning commission (UVLSRPC) recently received a $1.17 million dollar grant from the US Department of Transportation's (US DOT) Rural Road Safety in Action: A Safe Transportation System for Delivering Emergency Care project. The project comes from the US DOT's Safe Streets and Roads for All (SS4A) grant program. The SS4A program helps improve roadway safety by investing in safety strategies that will reduce serious injuries and fatalities.

This project will develop a Comprehensive Safety Action Plan and a supplemental post-crash care plan for 27 towns in the UVLS region in New Hampshire, and to conduct demonstration activities. Work includes a regional high-injury network, crash and EMS data analysis, stakeholder and public engagement, and pilots such as corridor delineation, quick-build roundabouts, and first responder response tools to reduce fatalities and improve post-crash care.

To learn more about this project, please reach out to Meghan Butts, Executive Director, at [email protected]

Tomorrow, October 17th is National Move Over Day. Supported by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) and state traffic agencies nationwide, the day reminds motorists to protect first responders, tow truck drivers, construction and utility crews, and stranded motorists.

When approaching flashing lights, hazard lights, or a vehicle stopped on the shoulder:
- Slow down as soon as you see the vehicle ahead
- Move over one lane when it is safe to do so
- If you cannot move over safely, reduce speed and proceed with caution
- Stay focused and avoid distractions
- Watch for people working or standing near the vehicle
