I was proud to bring a resolution recognizing May as Jewish American Heritage Month in Los Angeles Unified—an opportunity to affirm our commitment to the safety and belonging of Jewish students, staff, and families, celebrate the contributions of Jewish Americans, and deepen understanding through education. Especially in a time of rising antisemitism, we must be clear: there is no place for hate in our schools.

Now, Los Angeles school board members like Nick Melvoin are pushing for increased tech oversight in schools. In 2024, he championed a board resolution that barred student cellphone use during school. This year, after working with Schools Beyond Screens, Mr. Melvoin introduced the recent resolution curbing school technology.
In addition to new screen time limits for each grade, the policy will require elementary and middle schools to prohibit student device use during lunch and recess. The district must also compile a report on all current school technology contracts.
“I think of it as a recalibration, a policy that tries to strike the right balance for our kids,” Mr. Melvoin said in an interview.

In 1998, Italy’s Supreme Court overturned a r**e conviction, claiming the survivor's tight jeans implied consent. In protest, women in Parliament wore jeans, sparking the international movement now known as Denim Day. Today, we wear denim to stand with survivors and fight back against victim blaming.

Today’s story in the covering my resolution to limit screen time in our classrooms—the Board will vote today on this proposal, which calls for a much-needed recalibration of student technology use and developmentally appropriate guardrails for all grade levels. Our goal is to find the right balance between classroom technology and the kind of instruction and interaction our kids need to thrive.
