To a child experiencing homelessness, home means EVERYTHING.

A place to feel safe. A place to rest. A place to play, learn, and grow. Every child in our community deserves the safety, comfort, and stability of a place to call home.

And this November, YOU can help make that possible...by growing a MUSTACHE! 🥸

Miriam's House is thrilled to once again be a beneficiary of Mustaches for Kids (M4K), a month-long mustache-growing fundraiser supporting local nonprofits serving children. 100% of the funds we receive through M4K go directly toward housing for children experiencing homelessness and their families!

It's simple: Grow a mustache, raise money from friends and family, and make a difference (that lasts long after you've shaved!)

Growing Season kicks off one week from today → will you join us and grow for a good cause?

Kids are strong. Families are brave. And with a little help, they can make it home.

We loved welcoming the 4th graders from Onward Christian Academy back to Miriam’s House for the fourth year in a row!

These students (and their families!) collected so many thoughtful items from our wish list to help families starting over in their new homes. As part of their letter-writing unit, the students also wrote “Welcome Home” letters filled with kindness and encouragement to share with families as they begin again.

A special thank you to teachers Rosa and Julia and Principal Jalie for coordinating this wonderful annual project and helping their students experience the joy of giving back! Thank you, Onward, for helping us !

It’s !

At Miriam’s House, we know that ending homelessness takes a community, and there are so many ways YOU can be part of making that happen! Whether you have time to give, resources to share, or a heart for helping your neighbors in need, there’s a place for you in this work.

Want to get involved? Here are a few ways you can make a difference TODAY (and EVERY DAY)!

→ Become a monthly donor!
Your ongoing support provides a steady foundation for our work, helping individuals and families find housing and rebuild their lives.

→ Provide a holiday food box!
Help make the season special for a family we serve by filling a box with your family’s favorite holiday foods, treats, and perhaps a treasured recipe or two!

→ Grow a mustache!
November is almost here, and that means Mustaches 4 Kids is right around the corner! Sign up to grow (or sponsor a grower!) and help raise funds for local nonprofits serving children, including Miriam’s House.

→ Give your time!
From organizing donations and preparing apartments to helping maintain welcoming spaces for the families we serve, volunteers make an incredible difference in our work every day.

→ Stock our shelves!
Everyday essentials make a big difference for families in our shelter and those moving into homes of their own. Shop our wish list or drop off needed supplies!

However you choose to get involved, you’re helping create a community where everyone has a place to call home.

Meghan from Thomas Road Baptist Church’s Mom Life group reached out this fall to ask: “What would be most helpful for the families you serve?”

Then this wonderful group got to work assembling 11 overflowing “first night” welcome baskets for families moving out of shelter and into homes of their own! Filled with everything from cleaning supplies and toiletries to air mattresses, gift cards, and handwritten words of encouragement, these baskets will help families settle into their new homes with some of the essentials they need.

The group also prepared freezer meals for families arriving at our Family Shelter, providing comforting, nutritious meals during those first few days of a difficult transition.

We love seeing our community come together in such tangible and compassionate ways to support families experiencing homelessness. Many thanks to Meghan and all the wonderful women of Mom Life for the generosity, thoughtfulness, and care they’ve shown to the families we serve!

October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month đź’ś

Last week, our University of Lynchburg Bonner intern, Jenny, represented Miriam’s House at Alpha Chi Omega’s annual domestic violence awareness vigil on campus.

At Miriam’s House, we know that domestic violence and homelessness are deeply connected. For many survivors, leaving an abusive relationship doesn’t just mean finding the courage to leave. It means finding somewhere safe to go, often with children, and having the resources to build a life free from abuse.

But finding a safe place to begin again isn’t always easy.

Survivors of domestic violence often face significant barriers to securing housing:
→ Lost employment or limited work history due to abuse
→ Damaged credit or debt resulting from financial abuse
→ Eviction histories related to abuse or property damage
→ The need to find housing in a safe, confidential location
→ Limited access to childcare and financial resources

These are consequences of abuse, not choices survivors made. Yet they can stand between a survivor and a safe place to live.

At Miriam’s House, we work to remove these barriers. From connecting survivors with safety planning and legal resources through our community partners, to providing emergency shelter and helping families secure permanent housing through our Community First program, we help families find not only safety, but the resources and support they need to remain safe and financially independent.

Because having a safe home of your own, one where you have control over your surroundings and your future, is a critical step toward breaking the cycle of abuse. For a survivor of domestic violence, that home can be the foundation for a new beginning, one where safety, stability, and hope replace fear and uncertainty.

Thank you to Alpha Chi Omega for hosting this event each year and for your continued advocacy for survivors in our community.
