Middle Georgia State Department of English News and announcements from the Middle Georgia State University Department of English.

John Keats's 1816 poem "On First Looking into Chapman's Homer" describes the intense emotion, broadening of perspective, and sense of personal transformation that can accompany the study of literature. To Keats, reading is like "travel[ing] in the realms of gold / and seeing many goodly states and kingdoms" (lines 1-2), and our role as readers can be compared to that of "some watcher of the skies / when a new planet swims into his ken" (lines 9-10). The Middle Georgia State College Department of English invites you to be our traveling companions, to discover new planets of ideas, to traverse that foreign land of the imagination. Literary study can and does open up new worlds for those who embrace it with open minds and hearts, and we feel privileged to be your guides on this exciting journey.

Faculty Q&A: Dr. Storm Murray On The Surprising Depths Of Horror Literature 📖 😱

As Halloween approaches, it’s a good time to revisit the stories that keep us looking over our shoulders. In this faculty Q&A, MGA professor Dr. Storm Murray recommends three novels that use the darker side of storytelling to explore some very human questions about love, morality, addiction, and survival. Even readers who think horror isn’t for them might find something unexpected.

"My undergraduate advisor told me many years ago, 'The darkest stories teach us the most important lessons because they give us examples of what not to do,' and this sentiment is exactly why reading horror – and reading, in general – is so crucial."
