As School Board Chair, one of my responsibilities is overseeing the important work of our Policy Committee.

I truly appreciate the time, thoughtfulness, and dedication this committee brings to reviewing and strengthening the policies that guide our school division.

Policy work may not always be the most visible part of public education, but it is foundational to good governance. Clear, thoughtful policies help ensure consistency, accountability, transparency, and, most importantly, that we are making decisions in the best interests of our students and staff.

I’m grateful to our committee members and the staff who support this important work. Good governance doesn’t happen by accident. It takes preparation, collaboration, and a shared commitment to doing things well.

It’s not always the work people see, but it’s certainly work that matters!

I’m was so happy to be at National Honor Society induction last evening!

NHS represents so much more than academic achievement. Its four pillars—scholarship, leadership, service, and character—reflect the qualities our world needs now more than ever.

We need young people who are eager to learn, willing to lead, committed to serving others, and grounded in integrity. These students remind us that education is not just about preparing for a successful future; it’s about preparing to make a difference in the lives of others.

Congratulations to each inductee and to the families and educators who have helped you reach this milestone. Your achievements are worth celebrating, and I look forward to seeing how you use your talents to make our schools and our community stronger!

Your honor is in what you choose to do with the opportunities you face ahead in your future.

📚🔐 Learning, teamwork, and a little friendly competition at Grace E. Metz Middle School!

Yesterday, I had the pleasure of visiting Grace E. Metz Middle School to watch students take part in a Syllable Break-Out Challenge in the library, and they were having a BLAST!

Mrs. Scharek’s students are working hard to strengthen their reading skills, and it was wonderful to see them collaborating, encouraging one another, and celebrating their progress as a team.

Here’s what makes this experience especially exciting: Ms. Topping took the initiative to create an escape-room-style activity designed to engage students in learning. I can only imagine the time, creativity, and effort it took to bring this project to life!

Families often pay upwards of $50 per person for an escape room experience, but at Metz, our staff is bringing that same kind of excitement and problem-solving into the classroom to make learning engaging, interactive, and fun.

That’s the kind of dedication and innovation we have leading the way at Grace E. Metz Middle School!

Hats off to Ms. Scharek and Ms. Topping for finding creative ways to help our students grow. These are the moments that remind me why I care so deeply about our community and the future we’re building together. ❤️📚

Last evening, our very own Mr. Taft Kelly presented to City Council on MCPS’s replacement bus schedule! 🚌

This forward-thinking plan takes a strategic, long-term approach to maintaining our fleet, planning for future needs and helping prevent costly repairs before they happen.

Thoughtful planning today means greater reliability, smarter use of resources and better preparation for tomorrow. Thank you, Mr. Kelly, for helping keep MCPS moving forward!
